| The Ypres
Class is a very stealthy frigate used by the European Union Space
Defense Force
(primarily by the French, though Spain and Italy each have one) as an
“escort” for commercial convoys. In reality, such a heavily armed
and stealthy design would be better suited for commerce raiding actions
than ambushing pirates or an enemy’s prowling warships. The Ypres’ main armament is a burst
pulse torpedo launcher, which can fire an effective spread of guided
kinetic warheads even at long range, coupled with three
secondary beam batteries. The
Ypres has seen action against Manchurian and Carib League
sponsored pirates, though in both cases it was a matter of the EUSDF
hunting down their bases and destroying them rather than protecting a
convoy under attack. In both cases the clever EUSDF captains made
their transfer orbit burns from the jump point with the system’s
primary obscuring the bright drive plume of the engines, allowing them
to drift quietly into range (though this required the frigates to wait
seven weeks for contact.) It is wildly rumored that as many as
three Ypres’ frigates have
been infiltrated into Sagittarius via chartered ULCCs by the French
government, and without the knowledge of its other EU partner
nations. The purpose of the frigate(s) was believed to be
gathering intelligence on the disposition of the Sagittarius Arm
developments, and whether Gavin Aurimas and the SDC would constitute an
eventual threat to the EU and possible covert French expansion to
Sagittarius. Since the collapse of the Stargate, any French
frigates prowling the arm have been completely cut off from support,
and indeed if they exist, their mission has been effectively rendered
moot. |
