York
Class is a light cruiser displacement antimissile/antifighter platform
(i.e., a destroyer) intended to be able to escort fleet assets such as
carriers, assault transports, and battleships that all possess Long
Jump stardrive. Long Jump allows a task force to assemble in a
friendly or at least neutral star system well removed from the target
system, and to attack with little chance of the nature of the target
being revealed. Ships smaller than a displacement of MASS 100 are
incapable of accommodating Long Jump systems, which makes typical
destroyers useless for protecting the ships of a deep penetration
strike. The York class
was the result of a joint ship building program between Great Britain,
the United States, the EU, Japan, and the Martian Alliance to foster
better cooperation within the Western Alliance nations in the face of a
growing restlessness amongst the more belligerent and imperial Earth
powers (chiefly Manchuria and Aztlan, though several extrasolar
colonies were poised to become rogue states in their own right during
the period of the York’s
construction and deployment.) The York is a strong point defense platform, with twelve batteries and three area defense fire control systems that allow it to split its fire and protect its charges against a massed missile volley as might be encountered by a hostile Tunghu or Huangfeng. Its main and secondary laser mounts are only frigate class, however, and the York cannot hope to spar with anything other than a pirate one on one. In addition, the York carries an Area ECM Jammer system to reduce the effectiveness of hostile active sensors, and two excellent sensor suites to negate the targeting uncertainties created by stealthy hulls. Should the AMC begin construction of capital warships larger than frigates, the York would almost certainly have a place by their side. Mercer Heavy Industries has the plans and specifications for the class, and can produce the York at the Autofab Alfa facility orbiting Fury in the HM+53 0102 system. |
