The Waystation
Class small space station is used by the SDC as outposts for refuelling
and replenishing passing vessels and serving as a conduit for
communications between ships and colonies in Sagittarius. They
have hangar space for several large landers or a host of smaller craft,
cargo volume for propellant storage and transitional storage of cargoes
intended for use on the surfaces of worlds, and living space
accomodations for the families of station crew as well as passengers
awaiting a starship to arrive. The Waystation is lightly armed and
armored to discourage pirate attacks, and is capable of very sluggish
movement once the habitat wheel’s spin is arrested. There are
dozens of Waystation class
space stations in service with the SDC and with several colonies and
private companies. Waystations
under SDC control in remote or sparsely populated systems are known as
Waypoints or Ice Stations, depending on their specific function, and
will often have a Salvor
rescue cutter in a nearby parking orbit on call for deployment in
emergencies.
