The
VLCC is the largest commonly
encountered freighter in human space. They are enormous vessels,
rivaling battleships in mass, and can only be operated by the largest
shipping corporations on the primary trade routes in order to make a
profit. The VLCC typically carries 12,000 ton bulk cargoes such
as
volatiles, unprocessed foodstuffs, petroleum products, and raw or
semi-refined mineral ores. The VLCC is one of the few bulk cargo
carriers to carry its own landers in order to speed up turn-around time
for cargo loading and unloading. The VLCC is relatively helpless
against attack in spite of its two point defense batteries, as it is
slow and extremely fragile for a vessel of its size. There are
seven VLCCs in Sagittarius, four of them are operated by Mercer
Interstellar Freight corporation, one is owned by Gazprom Interstellar,
one with the Royal Dutch Shell corporation, and one is owned by the Jin
Xian Development Corporation but operated
under lease to an independent company out of the HM-45 4415 system.
