The
ULCC
is the largest commercial freighter class in human space. They
are enormous vessels, rivaling dreadnaughts in mass, and can only be
operated by the largest shipping corporations on the primary trade
routes in order to make a profit. The ULCC typically carries 16,000 ton
bulk cargoes such as volatiles, unprocessed foodstuffs, petroleum
products, and raw or semi-refined mineral ores. The ULCC, like the VLCC, is one of the few bulk cargo
carriers to carry its own landers in order to speed up turn-around time
for cargo loading and unloading. The ULCC is utterly helpless against
attack, as it is both miserably slow and completely unarmed. The
starship is completely optimized for cargo transport, allowing it to
haul massive cargoes or even entire colonial infrastructures in one
voyage.
At the present
there are no ULCCs
in service in Sagittarius, as the interstellar economy is incapable of
supporting such vessels. Mercer Heavy Industries retains the
ability to produce such ships when the demand for them becomes
available. In the meantime, Joachim Mercer has requested one ULCC to be constructed for the
Armada of the Mercer Compact in order to provide a heavy starlift
capability in the event of war between the colonies.
