| The Tunghu
is a Manchurian design intended for use as a commerce raider and as a
long range system defense vessel. As a missile frigate, the Tunghu relies for all of its
offensive power in the form of JN-19 Silkworm antiship missiles, and
has only a defensive beam battery. Manchurian designs have long
stressed missile armaments as they have never been able to adequately
master free-electron laser technologies to allow them to build
effective laser weapons larger than Class-2. As a commerce
raider, this has meant that Tunghus
are tied to a tender or other source of resupply to equip them with
replacement missiles, and in several military actions throughout the
2340s and 2350s, Western Alliance forces acting with U.N. sanction and
led by the United States, Great Britain,
and India ruthlessly sought out these vital bases and destroyed them,
effectively defanging the Tunghus
and forcing them to withdraw to Manchurian held systems. It is rumored that Tunghu frigates as well as other Manchurian designed warships are being produced in small numbers in the Jin Xian System by Manchurian agents who have infiltrated the colony with design templates and sufficient capital resources to build an orbital shipyard. |
