The
Thorgrim
is a Swedish design to meet its commitments to the EUSF and still
maintain neutrality – as a monitor, it is considered a defensive vessel
to protect EU colonies and EU flagged merchant convoys. The Thorgrim is a powerful system ship
of cruiser displacement, trading a stardrive for a heavy mixed battery
of weapons. The main offensive punch of the monitor comes from
its Class-3 laser with all-aspect firing ability and two Pulse Torpedo
Launchers with a forward firing aspect. The secondary batteries
have all aspect fire ability, and six British made R-45 Lancer or
French made M.23 Espadons light antiship missiles give the Thorgrim the ability to challenge
nearly any foe. The Thorgrim
also has the ability to board and seize any vessels it disables, and is
commonly used for deep space rescue and recovery operations using its
shuttle.
Six Thorgrims have been
constructed by Mercer Heavy Industries to defend the Sagittarius side
of the Stargate and to patrol the Gateway and Fury Systems. Two were
lost when the Stargate crashed in late January 2361. The SDC is
considering ordering more Thorgrims
to patrol other systems, but at the moment any such vessels constructed
would have to be partially disassembled and shipped via VLCCs or
other freighters, as the Conrad
class stardrive tug cannot accommodate such a large vessel, and there
are no larger stardrive tugs available in Sagittarius.
