Sojourner Class Design History and Analysis AMC Registry of Vessels for this class Gallery Images for this class
The Sojourner is a common light merchant vessel plying the trade routes. The design is tough for a commercial vessel, and as such the cargo capacity suffers to some extent, but the improved reliability and ease of maintenance has reduced operating costs enough to compensate. The Sojourner also carries passengers as a regular supplement to its freight hauling income, and can accommodate up to two dozen at the 3rd Class level of comfort, or by using the modular design of the berthing spaces can substitute for 2nd Class level of comfort at the rate of two 3rd Class berths for one 2nd Class berth. The trip as a passenger is by no means a luxurious one, but it's a damn sight cheaper to travel the stars in a Sojourner than an Astral Queen. Specifically, dining and entertainment facilities on the Sojourner are insufficient for 1st Class accommodations even if additional space is provided to the passengers, as the fare consists of pre-prepared meals that are reheated in the galley, and whatever media happens to be present in the ship's library. Almost all Sojourners in service are into their second or even third owners, as they are rugged, reliable, and cheap to operate even after their first mortgage is paid off. Ships that have been paid off typically make their way into the hands of smaller shipping firms and independent operators, lending the romance of the Free Trader to the class. The ship's biggest drawback is that it does not carry any landers, and so must exchange cargo and passengers via tenders and orbital skiffs. Many Sojourner hulls in Sagittarius were bought up by the SDC and converted to Tautog Missile Corvettes as a stop-gap defensive measure.
