The
Palladium
Class is a standard British Royal Starfleet destroyer whose design,
like that of the Oberon
frigate, has been manufactured for several other countries and even a
few corporations. The role of the destroyer is to protect other
spacecraft from attack by fighters, drones, and missiles, and relies on
a large battery of point defense weapons and area-defense fire control
suites to screen its charges. The Palladium throws further
uncertainty into any attack with its Area ECM Jammer, which makes
scanning for target selection problematic for any attacker, and allows
the destroyer to blend in with its convoy (provided that it does not
fire its powerful AMPLAR torch drive, which is an immediate
giveaway.) The Palladium
can protect up to three other vessels in close proximity to the
destroyer against missile and fighter attacks, and can even hold off
most pirate ships with its Class-2 laser battery. Several
corporate owned Palladiums
were allowed to transit the Stargate into Sagittarius provided their
weapons were removed and shipped separately by freighter – these ships
have been invaluable against the Dhaoghissi raiding parties, which use
fighters in large numbers.
