Nelson Class
The Nelson Class represents the pinnacle of battleship design in human space.  As part of an aggressive shipbuilding program following hostile actions against both Aztlan and Manchuria, the British Royal Starfleet wanted a powerful new battleship capable of using the latest in spinal mount weapons – the Meson Gun.  The utilization of a meson gun required that the battleship be maneuverable enough to put it on target in spite of the weapon’s limited firing arc, and so the Nelson has a superior amount of drive potential compared to other battleship classes.  The massive AMPLAR drives come at a great price – the Nelson’s beam battery, while still impressive, is not as heavy as other battleships of similar displacement, and the design is not as robust or as well armored as the Admiralty prefer in their premier capital warships.  The Nelson is, nonetheless, a powerful capital ship, and the terrible force of its meson gun makes up for any shortcomings in its beam battery armament.  The large cargo capacity and high fuel fraction also grants the Nelson impressive endurance.  While Parliament had originally insisted that the Nelson carry troops and landers, the Admiralty prevailed upon them not to mandate that requirement.  As a compromise, the Nelson still has a large hangar bay for small interface craft, and its crew is large enough to put a couple dozen armed sailors on the surface of a world without compromising the ship's manning.

Four ships of the Nelson class were produced by Mercer Heavy Industries from 2355 to 2359 in their orbital shipyards around Terranova in the Alpha Centauri System, and two more were produced in orbit around the Fury System (HM+53 0102) in Sagittarius at the MHI Autofab Alfa facility as an acid test for the production capabilities of the new shipyard there.  The two final Nelsons, HMS Rodney and HMS Jutland, were successfully completed, but required that critical electronic warfare systems as well as other subsystems be imported from the Orion Arm from subcontractors.  Presumably, the SDC can order Nelson class battleships from Mercer Heavy Industries using equivalent in house subsystems, but as with the Manhattan and Trafalgar classes, there is an urgent need to produce smaller warships capable of patrolling the 70 inhabited star systems within 10 parsecs of Gateway, and so Nelson class battleships are not planned for production in the foreseeable future.
