Leyte Gulf Class
The Leyte Gulf is an American fighter carrier dating back to 2326.  The United States has always had a knack for putting together carrier designs, and the Leyte Gulf demonstrates what a line carrier should be.  While not as massive (or impressive) as the famous Coral Sea class fleet carriers, the Leyte Gulf brings considerable firepower to bear for planetary assaults and fleet actions while at the same time being very easily defended from counterattack.

The Leyte Gulf carries a normal complement of 18 FS-33C Tomahawk starfighters, 6 FS-33D Warhawk heavy starfighters, 6 FS-32B Goshawk interceptors, and 6 AS-35C Thunderbolt torpedo bombers for a typical space superiority deployment, and will substitute the torpedo and interceptor squadrons as well as one regular fighter squadron for one interface fighter squadron using FI-41A Headhunters and two squadrons of interface attack fighters using the AI-38B Strikers for surface attack and close aerospace support missions.  In addition, a Chinnook CSAR interface craft is also carried in the hangar bay for rescue and recovery operations.

The SDC is being persuaded to field at least one Leyte Gulf carrier by Joachim Mercer, as the design was made available for construction by licensed allies of the United States in 2350, and Great Britain had three carriers constructed for them by Mercer Heavy Industries to replace their smaller and aging Ark Royal carriers.  The need to field a full sized starfighter carrier is still being debated even though the facilities to construct such a large warship exist at the MHI Autofab Alfa space station in orbit around Fury.  In addition to the huge expense of the ship itself, the aerospace wing must itself be constructed, and finally there is a lack of qualified pilots and aircrew for the fighters at the moment.  If the SDC fields a fighter carrier within the next two years, it will most likely be a smaller Ark Royal class ship.
