Konstantin Olshansky Class
The Konstantin Olshansky is a modern multirole frigate of the Russian Space Force (VKS).  The Russians, while merely a regional power on Earth, have always maintained a strong foothold in space, and as stardrive technology propagated out from under the United States’ hands when the SSTE corporation’s exclusive arrangements with them expired in 2125, the VKS and its civilian RKA counterpart quickly seized the initiative with manned and robotic exploration of interstellar space.  Russian offworld colonies became the new frontier much like Siberia had been in the 19th and 20th centuries, and millions immigrated to new worlds.

This new frontier required a constant stream of colonists and supplies moving out from Earth, and in return the riches of alien worlds propped up Russia’s flagging economy and status in world affairs.  Manchuria, which had fought several wars with Russia over the Russian Far East territories, began arming and equipping privateer starships to prey upon Russian merchant shipping in an attempt to squeeze their old enemies to economic death, and the VKS responded with pirate hunters and escorts.  The undeclared Commerce War ran for over two centuries without resolution before Manchuria became entangled with the Western Alliance and had to devote its energies elsewhere.

The Konstantin Olshansky Class is a reflection of how Russia’s economy depends on commerce from the stars, and how other nations seek to deprive them of that commerce.  It is a heavily armed vessel with the displacement nearly that of a light cruiser, robust in hull and armor, and carrying a platoon of powered armor equipped VKS Marines and their landers for immediate dispatch to trouble spots.  The success of the Konstantin Olshansky design led to the Manchurians building the similar concept Jiangwei light cruiser. Konstantin Olshansky class ships are the mainstay of the VKS, and have been sold to Ukraine and India, as well as constructed under license by both countries and for private corporate ownership with a diminshed electronics suite and no hull stealthing.  Gazprom Interstellar and Ceres Metals corporations were allowed to bring one down-rated frigate each through the stargate for their security forces by replacing the Class-2 batteries with Class-1 mounts and decommissioning the racks for the powerful SS-K-31 Vampyr antiship missiles.  It is not known if both frigates are still in this condition, as it would require little effort to replace the downrated weapon systems with original equipment.
