The Horizon Class scout has seen
service primarily in the USSF, but has also been constructed under
license to Japan, the Oceanic Federation, and Brazil. It is a
Fleet Scout starship whose primary mission is to gather intelligence on
the disposition of hostile power assets in a system and to safely
return that information to higher command. Since there is no FTL
communication outside of a starship or a Stargate, the Horizon must itself return to the
Jump Point with the data. To this end the primary armament is
essentially defensive. Horizons
also feature a small “Mission Bay” capable of carrying a Special
Operations Team and their equipment for insertion on the surface of
worlds.
Horizons in the
Sagittarius Arm are mainly SDC mail and courier ships, though there are
perhaps a dozen under private or corporate ownership as yachts, light
explorers, or even convoy escorts. Their principal liability is
their lack of a spin gravity habitat, which limits the amount of time
these vessels and their crews may spend away from their bases without
damaging their health. They are also expensive to operate, using
an antimatter-catalyzed fusion torch for their main propulsion drive to
maximize their effective Delta-Vee. Horizons without access to
antimatter halve their Delta-Vee values when using their torch drive in
conventional fusion mode.
