Hernan Cortez
The Hernan Cortez explorer is a Spanish design for the European Space Agency, and exported to several other nations over a period of twenty years.  The Cortez is often compared to its American counterpart, the Lewis and Clark explorer, a comparison that stands it in a very good light until one considers that the Lewis and Clark was never intended for independent operations.  The Cortez has a decent spin habitat for the crew, providing 0.4 G to maintain health and body strength for surface exploration, but at the price of being dependent on a small lander for any surface contact.  Surprisingly for an ESA design, it is very well armed and armored for such a small vessel – there are persistent rumors that the EUDF Special Operations Command secretly subsidized the Cortez’s R&D and initial low rate production costs in order to gain a few vessels for themselves as SpecWar platforms.  The Cortez’s hull is designed to have special appliqué “surface treatments” installed for hostile radiation and electromagnetic energy environments, though the ship could just as easily accept stealthy radar and lidar absorbing materials.  The modular laboratory modules, while state of the art, can also be easily replaced with more berthing for SpecWar operators and another small lander.

Several Hernan Cortez explorers were sold to private concerns between 2358 and early 2361, many of whom then made their way into Sagittarius.  As was SSTE policy, ships with Class-2 or better laser weapons had to remove or downgrade their weapons to Class-1 in order to be allowed through the Stargate.  Whether or not any Hernan Cortez class explorers have reinstated their original weaponry after the Stargate crash is unconfirmed.
