The Gateway Station SDC Headquarters
serves as the administrative hub for the HM+0 0000 System and the
waystation for further penetration into the Sagittarius Arm. Gateway Station is also heavily
armed, and serves as the first line of defense against a hostile
takeover of the Stargate. In this respect it mounts a powerful
array of laser batteries including two Class-4 and two Class-5 arrays
with all-aspect fire capability, making it a dangerous proposition for
any hostile force to approach to a range where their own weapons can be
effective. In addition to the lasers, Gateway Station carries twelve R-45
Lancer light antiship missiles, giving it a reliable heavy strike
capability on par with some missile cruisers. Three squadrons of
fighters give the station the ability to engage hostile fighters away
from the station, or to assist in point defense against missile attacks.
Gateway Station was spared from the destruction of the
Sagittarius-Orion Stargate on 29 January 2361 because it had been
decoupled from its orbit of the Stargate via the assistance of the Conrad class
tugs Nostromo (AMC-083) and Narcissus (AMC-084), and was
located on the opposite side of the Gateway primary when the wormhole
destabilized. Since the crash of the Stargate, the raison d'être of Gateway
Station has vanished, and there is talk of dismantling the space
fortress and shipping it to the Fury System (HM+53 0102) for
reassembly. Joachim Mercer, the primary supporter of the Armada
of the Mercer Compact, has proposed that Gateway Station remain where
it is, and that it serve as the headquarters for the A.M.C.
