Fournissuer Blindé

Fournisseur Blinde
The Fournisseur class merchant is a French merchant starship subsidized by the EU government to provide logistical support to the EUSF during times of war or crisis, and normal trade and shipping during times of peace.  Shipping companies were offered attractive loans and other subsidies by the EU to purchase and operate the Fournisseur, on condition that they be ready for call up on 30 days notice.  This policy led to more than thirty Fournisseurs being constructed between 2340 and 2360, when the program was terminated due to budget constraints.

The Fournisseur is a typical merchant startship of its displacement class, with a large cargo bay, passenger capacity for up to 25 3rd Class passengers (most Fournisseurs in service upgraded at least a handful of cabins to 2nd Class), and a hangar bay capable of supporting four small or two medium landers.  The ship has slightly better fuel endurance than competing designs, allowing it to cut a few days off of the transit times between systems.  It is armed only with a single point defense battery, and when called up for military service was wholly dependent upon escort ships for protection.  At least six Fournisseurs were modified in a special government defense program after 2351 to be able to mount an additional point defense battery and appliqué hull armor with only two weeks of maintenance work at the expense of 400 tons of cargo mass.  These Fournisseurs Blindé
s were considered by the EUSF to be capable of more arduous service during times of hostility, even though they still required an escorting frigate or destroyer for protection.
