The Conrad
Class stardrive tug is often seen plying the major trade routes with
large bulk cargoes such as mineral ores, raw petroleum and petroleum
products (in some cases the petroleum is being refined during transit
from point of origin to the destination), and liquified methane and
deuterium for reactor and drive fuel. The Conrad can also transport
spacecraft of up to 100-MASS that have suffered main propulsion or
stardrive malfunctions to a repair facility while accommodating up to
25 stranded crew and passengers. The ships are relatively weak,
with most structural support going towards the towing umbilical and
related systems. The Conrad
is unarmed, which is why they are not typically encountered in less
traveled space without an escort. The Conrad Class may detach from its
towing umbilical (and the cargo) and land on worlds with an atmospheric
pressure of 0.50 Bar or less. Worlds with denser atmospheres
require a more robust heat shield than the Conrad provides. When
detached, the Conrad’s main
drive thrust increases to 5. The tug is unusual for a merchant
vessel in that it carries a laboratory with a complete medical and
scientific analysis suite. This is due to the potential need to
treat injured or ill crew from a stricken vessel, and most Conrads in service have a medical
doctor on board as their standard crew. Five Conrad class ships are known to
exist in Sagittarius as merchant vessels, and have been put on retainer
by the SDC for rescue/salvage operations for SDC vessels as necessary.
