| The Connestoga
class merchant freighter is a venerable design dating back to 2240 that
is optimized for maximum cargo capacity. It is neither fast nor
particularly robust, and is completely unarmed, but can haul an
impressive 44-MASS (48% of total MASS) worth of cargo. Connestogas ply the major trade
routes in human space in great convoys, and are often the primary
freight vessels employed to haul a fledgling colony’s materiel and
supplies to its new home world. Connestogas
make up a sizeable percentage of most of each great nations’ space
going merchant shipping, and as such become primary targets during
commerce raids. Because they are unarmed and rather weak, they
also make fat targets for enterprising pirates. As such it is
rare for a Connestoga to
travel alone during times of conflict, and they are often paired with a
Cimmeron
freighter on a one for one basis in addition to a frigate and a
destroyer or two. Connestogas
have been in service long enough that a sizeable percentage of the
ships in service have been paid off and then sold to private
owners. Most of the thirty Connestogas
in Sagittarius that are not under SDC or Mercer colors are in the hands
of independent Free Traders. Ships of the class
