The Collier
Class space station is a common sight throughout human space, acting in
a variety of roles as a cargo transfer point and refueling depot
depending on the configuration of its internal holds. One or more
Colliers are
encountered wherever a space facility such as a Banks or Waystation
class habitat are found. The design is optimized for maximum
cargo capacity, and has little to offer for self-defense, traveling
accommodations, or other functions. The design is strictly
utilitarian, and as such, duty on a Collier
is considered unglamorous at best. Nevertheless, the Collier and similar designs form
the backbone of any interstellar infrastructure. The Collier, like other hub and wheel
design space stations, may be linked together to form larger complexes
to meet the needs of a system or world, and it is not uncommon for a
refueling depot to have four or more stations linked to provide up to
40,000 tons of reaction mass for passing starships. The SDC has
over sixty Colliers in
service throughout Sagittarius assisting Waystations, Ice Stations, and
serving as transfer depots for freighters, and plans construction and
deployment of an additional forty stations over the next ten years as
infrastructure improvements.
