The Cimmeron
is a typical armed merchant freighter plying profitable but often
remote trade routes where the security of a great nation’s frigates can
be hard to come by. Though there is a high barrier to starship
ownership, piracy is far more common than most expect, and even the
great nations themselves engage in undeclared commerce wars through
proxies. Ships like the Cimmeron
can operate alone or in small squadrons for mutual support, and have
sufficient armament to discourage most pirate actions from pressing the
attack. Actual commerce raiders, being dedicated warships, are
still out of the Cimmeron's
league, and would require their own warships as escorts.
The Cimmeron devotes just 33%
of its available MASS to cargo capacity, meaning that it usually
operates on a razor thin margin when carrying mundane cargoes on
regular shipping routes. For this reason, they are rarely found
on the main routes, and when they are, it is usually because they are
supplementing their income by acting as an escort for an unarmed
convoy. The Cimmeron
has been purchased by several great powers to serve as naval
auxiliaries, and the SDC also purchased twenty ships to ferry goods and
supplies to colonies in Sagittarius.
