Ceres
The Ceres Class of agricultural ships were first constructed in 2160 to support colonization efforts for fledgling EU-sponsored colonies.  They were originally of French design, but since then numerous construction licenses have been granted and the original blueprints improved upon over the last two hundred years as new technologies were developed and lessons were learned in generating foodstuffs in space.  The modern Ceres class ships retain their forebears’ fragile hull and sluggish drive systems, as well as remaining utterly defenseless without an armed escort, but can produce sufficient raw and semi-processed food to support 3600 people indefinitely (provided composting and other sources of replenishment such as water, and air are made available).  Livestock as well as crops can be raised on a Ceres class ship, as the large spin habitat wheel can provide about 0.6 G artificial gravity without rotating so fast as to create disabling coriolis forces for the animals to experience.  Both livestock and crops can be processed on board, and the resulting foodstuffs prepared for shipment to the colony using the ship’s own Landers.

The Ceres class ships are very expensive to operate and maintain, and as a result only the best financed colonial efforts can afford one.  Having a Ceres class ship in orbit on the other hand can mean the difference between eventual success and miserable starvation at the hands of a blight, bad weather, or unforeseen incompatibility with the biosphere.  There are six Ceres class ships or similar variants in Sagittarius supporting colonial efforts on marginal worlds.  Two of these Ceres class ships are owned by the SDC, and remain on standby in orbit around Fury to provide emergency assistance anywhere in Sagittarius in the event of a famine.
