Astral Queen Class Design History and Analysis AMC Registry of Vessels for this class Gallery Images for this class
The Astral Queen series of passenger liners ply the spacelanes between Earth and the offworld colonies, chiefly for the purpose of tourism, but also as chartered voyages to bring colonists and their belongings to their new homes. The idea of interstellar travel being taken merely for pleasure is a relatively new one, but with enough people with the income to do so, and the effect of popular entertainment making the idea attractive, passenger lines like Empress, Blue Diamond, and Astral Adventures have redesigned their habitat modules with bigger staterooms, several restaurants with top chefs presiding over them, live entertainment, and of course, casinos. Where possible, and the Astral Queen's impressive Delta-V of 556 km/sec makes a lot possible, flybys of impressive worlds and even the occasional stopover for a landing with the ship's small craft are conducted. One tradition the Astral Queen has become famous for is the Grand Ball, held in the bow section of the starship in the Grand Gallery, a large split compartment ballroom and dining area normally under free-fall conditions. The vast deck to overhead windows over an amazingly immersive view of space. During the decleration burn to a destination port of call, the Astral Queen's crew will increase the propellant mass flow rate to the engines, increasing thrust from 25 milligees under normal cruise mode to about 200 milligees. This is sufficient artificial gravity to allow an elegant meal and dance for the passengers, and is considered the highlight of the trip. A famous dramatic minseries from Elgar Poincaire called The Last Absolution used an actual Grand Ball event for the Star Empress (AMC-247) as a setting for the program's memorable finale, and received one of the highest ratings of the decade. Astral Queens owned by corporations chartered in the United States, Great Britain, and Brazil are also typically obligated for call-up as reserve troop transports (which may carry 250 troops plus their equipment), and in exchange for this obligation receive government subsidies and tax breaks. The Astral Queen is a pleasant vessel to travel in, though most are not luxury liners in any particular sense. There are fifteen Astral Queen class ships currently in Sagittarius, most of these under charter for colonial development when the stargate crashed and stranded them. One Astral Queen is believed to have been lost to unknown assailants in the HB+55 1522 System while transporting colonists.
