Ark Royal Class
The Ark Royal class escort carrier was a mainstay of the British Royal Starfleet until roughly 2249, when the Ministry of Defense began to look at larger carriers, and eventually settled on the American Leyte Gulf class rather than spend research and development monies to produce a new type of warship.  One of the reasons why the British wanted a new carrier was that the Ark Royal, while a solid design for its displacement, simply could not bring enough fighters to bear for anything other than the smallest of engagements, and as a result Ark Royals were often deployed in pairs or squadrons of three.  Analysts in the Ministry of Defense pointed out that it was less expensive to man and operate a single larger carrier than it was to operate several smaller ships in order to deliver the same number of fighters to the combat zone.

The Ark Royal’s principal duty in the Royal Starfleet was to provide escort and screening for the fleet, and to provide a tactical assault capability for surface actions.  When deployed for surface actions, the British, like the Americans, deployed dedicated interface fighters aboard their carriers, and when atmospheric operations were not expected used purely vacuum capable fighters.  In any event, the British doctrine of employing carriers and starfighters is considered secondary to the Admiralty’s Line of Battle doctrine, where cruisers and battleships are the principal combat vessels.

The SDC is studying a proposal to build and operate one or more Ark Royal carriers in Sagittarius in the wake of the Stargate collapse.  Like the Oberon versus Manhattan debate, it is clear for the moment that any defense of human colonies in Sagittarius will rely on large numbers of smaller warships covering more systems at one time rather than concentrating the SDC’s military strength in a small flotilla of large capital ships.  A lack of trained starfighter pilots is a major obstacle to the deployment of the Ark Royal, and no ships are expected to deploy for at least two years.
