Sagittarius Development Corporation Colonial Survey

The Sagittarius Development Corporation undertook a survey of settled star systems within 33 light years of the Gateway System (HM+00 0000) in 2361, shortly before the collapse of the Stargate and the cessation of contact between Sagittarius and the rest of Human Space.  The vessels used were primarily the Bonaventure Class explorers used in the initial survey and exploration of the Sagittarius Arm, though the use of modified Horizon Class scouts was also used for outlying routes.  The S.D.C. did not keep close records of colonial development outside its own projects, in keeping with Gavin Aurimas' stated desire that the Sagittarius Arm serve as a refuge for the disaffected and the oppressed from the rest of Human Space, and as such, any colonial project that could cross the threshold of the Stargate into Sagittarius was free to settle wherever they could find a new home.  It is generally believed that human settlement of Sagittarius actually extends as far as thirty parsecs (97.8 light years) from Gateway, though there are no accurate official records of this, and in any event the numbers of colonists out beyond ten parsecs represent a tiny fraction of the total population of sophonts.

The official total sophont population of the Sagittarius Arm is a little over 2 million humans or human subtypes, plus a handful of AIs, full conversion borgs, and human Uploads, of which nearly three quarters reside in the Fury System (HM+53 0102).  The next largest colony is the Jin Xian System (HM-45 4415), which boasts of over 242,000 souls.  Most colonies have populations in the hundreds or low thousands, though there are a total of 67 star systems that have at least some permanent human presence.

Colony Development Ratings

Each colony is rated in three areas of development plus a fourth area of natural resources.  A colony has an Agricultural, Industrial, Technical, and a Resource level to determine the availability of goods and services and to modify their buying and selling prices.  These ratings are listed from A to G, with A being superior.  An explanation of each rating is below.

Agricultural Rating
Rating Value
Price Modifer
Description
A
Up to 30% discount
The colony produces an abudance of food for export, and can support a variety of exotic or luxury food types for sale at an excellent market price.
B
Up to 20% discount
The colony produces food primarily as an export commodity, having sufficient surplus to keep prices cheap enough for its colonists to enjoy a wide and varied diet with luxury food items commonly available for a reasonable market rpice.
C
Up to 10% discount
The colony has sufficient agricultural output to feed itself and maintain a steady export volume of foodstuffs.  The available diet for a colonist is varied, and the food production industry advanced enough to provide a modest amount of finished food products requiring little additional preparation.
D
No modifier
The colony has sufficient agricultural output to feed itself and set aside a small surplus for sale or for storage against future need.  The available diet for a colonist is relatively varied, and the food production industry advanced enough to provide a small amount of finished food products requiring little additional preparation.
E
Up to 10% increase
The colony must import up to 25% of its food supply in order to maintain its population.  The available diet for a colonist is typically uninteresting, but the occasional luxury food item can be made available provided sufficient imports are available.
F
Up to 20% increase
The colony must import up to 50% of its food supply in order to maintain its population.  The available diet for a colonist is typically bland and tedious but otherwise sustaining provided sufficient imports are available.
G
Up to 30% increase
The colony must import nearly all of its food supply in order to maintain its population.  What agriculture exists is usually self-contained spirulina algae culture life support packs, where excess algae from air and water recycling can be consumed.
