Roster A summary notable Non-Player Characters Current Campaign Date: 7 May 2362 Fa Zheng De (Deceased) Age: 63 (at time of death) Sex: Male Known Information: President and sole owner of Fa Enterprises of Sagittarius, Zheng De came from a wealthy mercantile family living in Hong Kong on Earth. He dabbled in politics briefly, and served with distinction on the Guangzhou Directorate Lower Board for several years before retiring from public life and expanding his familiy's holdings in the offworld colonies. Fa Offworld Enterprises quickly became a powerful and wealthy corporation serving predominately Chinese and Korean interests beyond Earth orbit under Zheng De's leadership. He married Li Bai Ling in 2336, and sired a single child, Mei Ling, who was born in 2338. He became estranged from Bai Ling shortly before the public announcement of the Sagittarius-Orion Stargate in 2357, and left the Orion Arm shortly after with Mei Ling in tow. Fa Offworld Enterprises was sold off to other relatives and business partners, and Zheng De used the capital raised to found Fa Enterprises of Sagittarius, where he made a second fortune in shipping and mercantile trade, industrial development, and minor terraforming operations in conjunction with Terradyne/SDC. Zheng De was apparently killed in a rockslide while surveying a moon in the HM+47 4301 System for future development on 28 May 2361. Fa Mei Ling is believed to be the sole inheritor of his estate, including ownership of Fa Enterprises and all of its assets. An autopsy of Fa Zheng De's remains conducted by Doctor Ai Tanaka and witnessed by Captain Arnold Preston of the armed yacht Celestial Phoenix (AMC-127) on 26 September 2361 has concluded that his crushing injuries were inflicted post-mortem, and that he had experienced a needle-beam laser wound to the base of his skull causing trauma to the brain stem, which in conjunction with the traces of muscle relaxants found in his tissues, was sufficient to cause a swift and relatively painless death. Doctor Tanaka has since filed a second death certificate listing Zheng De's death as a homicide. It is later discovered that Fa Zheng De was a member of the Black Dragon Society, a secret society of corporate, political, and criminal elites, and that his death was voluntary as a result of breaking with their policies in Sagittarius. Fa Mei Ling Age: 24 Sex: Female Known Information: Only child of Fa Enterprises president Fa Zheng De, Mei Ling was a child prodigy of exceptional intellect who attended Cambridge University at the age of 16 and earned a degree in international business finance. Since her college days, she has become a playgirl, living a life of luxury and interstellar travel before finally accompanying her father to Sagittarius. She, like her father, is estranged from her mother, and is effectively alone and cut off from her family when the Stargate crashes on 29 January 2361. Only a few months after the crash, her father is killed in a rockslide while surveying a world in the HM+47 4301 System, leaving her as the sole heir to the Fa Enterprises fortune. Mei Ling, while very smart, is also flighty and has led a very sheltered life. Her wanderlust has made it difficult to keep companions for long, and as a result she is a little lonely. Her one constant companion is a scruffy cat of indeterminate breed named Mao Ke. Since the beginning of her journey to the Scherzo System to collect the remains of her father and to assume the ownership of Fa Enterprises of Sagittarius, she has become embroiled in some kind of plot to kill or kidnap her before she can take control of her father's company. Upon finally untangling the truth of the matter of her father's death, Mei Ling has liquidated Fa Enterprises' assets and 'retired' to Fury, where she is believed to be quietly plotting her revenge against the person ultimately responsible, Kuan Yin. Li Shu Fei Age: 28 Sex: Male Known Information: Shu Fei is a full conversion cyborg, existing biologically only as a brain, spinal cord, and lymphatic system. His conversion to a mostly machine existence was paid for by Fa Zheng De, who encountered him in a terminal casualty ward at Hong Kong Orbital, Earth, as an unlawful combatant at the end of the Commerce War in 2359 facing disconnection from life support as punishment for his criminal activities. Zheng De used his political clout to secure his pardon from the Guangzhou government and hired him on as a personal bodyguard. He joined Mei Ling's personal protection detachment upon Zheng De's death. His employment under Mei Ling comes from Sun Cheng, the personal assistant of Mei Ling's late father. Shu Fei claims to have served in the Manchurian Army prior to coming to Sagittarius, though he also seems to have been connected with a Triad organization at one time. He is not a very likeable character, and is avoided by the crew of the Celestial Phoenix for his erratic and at times irrationally violent behavior. Shu Fei confessed to Michael Teach during a billiards game in the town of Jotunheim on the planet Midgard that he had sworn an oath to die for Mei Ling rather than see her come to harm. It has since been revealed that Shu Fei assisted Fa Zheng De's suicide, and helped Sun Cheng cover it up as an accident to allay SDC suspicions. Since the break up of Fa Enterprises by Mei Ling in November of 2361, Shu Fei has been working as James Farrior's personal bodyguard as a contract employee of Ceres Metals Corporation aboard the armed yacht Sarritor (AMC-215). Captain Arnold Preston Age: 48 Sex: Male Known Information: Captain Preston is the ship's master of the SS Celestial Phoenix, a Celestial class armed yacht owned and operated by Fa Enterprises of Sagittarius. Captain Preston is a retired British Royal Starfleet officer who held the rank of Commander, and served as the Weapons Officer of the Oberon Class frigate HMS Titania during a famous combat with an Aztlan cruiser task force. Captain Preston later went on to command several Oberons in the Royal Starfleet before retiring after being passed over for promotion to Captain, and the command of a Trafalgar heavy cruiser. He is known to be a fair but meticulous and demanding ship's master, and served Fa Zheng De for several years in Sagittarius before the Celestial Phoenix was handed over for Mei Ling's use. 1st Officer Bryce MacAllister Age: 42 Sex: Male Known Information: Bryce is the 1st Officer aboard the yacht Celestial Phoenix, serving as the Astrogator as well as head of the ship's Executive Department. Bryce, like Captain Preston, was a career British Royal Starfleet officer, though he was of Canadian birth. He has served mostly on Palladium class destroyers, with his career culminating in a tour as Operations Officer aboard a Trafalgar heavy cruiser prior to his retirement. He came to work for Fa Enterprises of Sagittarius through a mutual acquaintence of Fa Zheng De's who was living in Hong Kong. Bryce is good natured and agreeable company, in contrast to the stuffy Preston or especially Bryce's young assistant, Jill McCloud. Chief Engineer John Hinton Jones Age: 53 Sex: Male Known Information: John Jones, or J.J. as he is known informally, is the 2nd Officer aboard the yacht Celestial Phoenix, where he serves as the Engineering Officer. John, like his superiors Bryce MacAllister and Arnold Preston, was a member of the British Royal Starfleet, although in Jones' case he was an enlisted spacer who left the service with the rank of Warrant Officer rather than as a commissioned officer. His skills served him well aboard the Nelson class battleship HMS Wellington, where he was decorated for extreme heroism during a reactor plant casualty. The experience left him badly scarred along the left half of his body, scars that he has chosen to keep as a reminder to himself and his engineering staff of the dangers of working with practical high energy physics. Chief Purser Robert Street Age: 36 Sex: Male Known Information: Robert Street is the 3rd Officer aboard the Celestial Phoenix, acting in his capacity as the Ship's Purser. Street is fairly new to the ship, coming on board in late 2360 just prior to the ship being put at the disposal of Fa Mei Ling. Before his assignment to the Celestial Phoenix, Robert Street was part of Fa Zheng De's personal staff as an administrative assistant and personnel manager. He is a trusted member of the organization, and some on board the ship say he was put on board to act as a spy for Sun Cheng. Robert Street is in charge of the entire valet staff for Mei Ling, which makes him an ideal agent for such a mission. He is a conscientious yet unflappable man, dedicated to serving the Fa family with a zeal that many would find unusual for a Westerner. Assistant Astrogator Jill McCloud Age: 24 Sex: Female Known Information: Jill is the 4th Officer aboard the yacht Celestial Phoenix, serving as the Assistant Astrogator and the reserve Lander Pilot for the ship. Jill is businesslike and professional - some might say a bit of a cold fish - and has little if any social life aboard ship. Her one hobby is crossword puzzles, and she amuses herself in her off duty time with the most formidable digests of puzzles from the Times of London, the Hong Kong Daily Mail, and the New York Times. Assistant Engineer Saul Goldsmith Age: 28 Sex: Male Known Information: Saul Goldsmith is the 5th Officer aboard the yacht Celestial Phoenix, where he serves as the Assistant Engineer under John Jones. Saul is an American expatriate who had served for seven years in the Israeli Space Defense Force before leaving Earth to come to Sagittarius. Saul is an experienced stardrive and power systems engineer, though he has little practical experience as an officer leading men rather than being one of the led, which sometimes causes fraternization issues on board ship. Ben Fang Long Age: 134 (estimate - actual age unknown) Sex: Male Known Information: Ben Fang Long was at one time the head of a powerful Triad mafia organization during a time of open warfare between the various Triads. He showed great leadership and diplomatic ability, and was finally able to end the war, but at great personal cost to himself. He retired from a leadership role in his organization and withdrew from criminal operations, and took up the practice of traditional Chinese medicine and astrology on Aquilla. He is believed to act as an advisor for his old Triad, and is still highly respected among the Chinese criminal syndicates. Fang Long came to Sagittarius at the suggestion of Fa Zheng De, a man he has known for many years, and who Fang Long helped establish his mercantile empire decades earlier. Ben Fang Long is perhaps the one man who is most informed as to the machinations that have destroyed Fa Enterprises and killed its founder, and has made an enemy of Kuan Yin in spite of his efforts to stay out of the way. He is currently in hiding under the protection of the Jovian Syndicate on Fury. Kong Wei Age: 56 Sex: Male Known Information: Kong Wei serves as Mei Ling's personal attorney and advisor during her time in Sagittarius. He was appointed by Sun Cheng to his current position, though he was a trusted advisor to Zheng De prior to his untimely death in the HM+47 4301 System. Sun Cheng Age: 82 Sex: Male Known Information: Sun Cheng was Fa Zheng De's personal attorney and closest advisor prior to his death in 2361. Sun Cheng has served with Zheng De since the latter took over operations of Fa Offworld Enterprises in 2340, and has been instrumental in the formation and success of Fa Enterprises of Sagittarius since 2357. Sun Cheng was present at the time of Zheng De's death, and has summoned Mei Ling to Scherzo as a result of her father's dying instructions. Upon Zheng De's death, Sun Cheng is the one person with the most intimate knowledge of the company's operations and finances, and was expected to be retained by Mei Ling upon her formal possession of Fa Enterprises of Sagittarius. His status with Mei Ling has changed with the revelation during a post mortem examination conducted by Doctor Ai Tanaka, that Fa Zheng De's death did not occur in the manner in which it was made known, but that he was most likely murdered. Eventually, and through the capture of Janos and his computer, it is learned that Sun Cheng was being blackmailed by Kuan Yin to kill his employer and make it look like an accident, then dissolve Fa Enterprises and sell it off to Dahan and other companies. Apparently, he has a mistress and two daughters living on Jin Xian, who will be killed if he doesn't comply with Kuan Yin's orders. After further interview it is revealed that he had informed Zheng De of what was going on, and that Zheng De had decided that the only way to end the strife and protect Mei Ling was to give in to Kuan Yin's demands by commiting suicide and having Sun Cheng dissolve the company in such a way as to ensure that Mei Ling would be provided for. Colonel Kai Age: 49 Sex: Male Known Information: Colonel Kai is a Korean of Chinese descent who is known to have served in the Manchurian Army as an intelligence and counter-espionage officer. He is known to have dabbled in criminal affairs and is believed to have fled the army as a deserter for unknown reasons. He is currently operating on the planet Midgard in the HD+54 1018 System, using the colony town of Jotunheim as a base, and he has some sort of partnership with Valery Rostovich, as the two will occasionally drink and talk at the bar in Olaf's tavern. Doctor Dominic Triari Age: 37 Sex: Male Known Information: Doctor Triari is a medical doctor with a small but well equipped clinic in the colony town of Jotunheim on the planet Midgard in the HD+54 1018 System. Doctor Triari is a specialist in exobiological medicine, and has been preparing several papers on diagnosing and treating local Midgard allergens and pathogens. He is kind and conscientious, but gives the impression of being wound a little too tight. He came to Jotunheim with the expectation that his research would make him well known among his colleagues in Sagittarius, but with the lack of development of the Midgard colony, he has instead found himself languishing in a backwater system far removed from his peers. Snorri Thorsen Age: 31 Sex: Male Known Information: Snorri is a Norwegian expatriate living in the colony town of Jotunheim on the planet Midgard in the HD+54 1018 System. Currently self-employed as a rickshaw operator and general handyman, Snorri is the go-to guy for any gossip in and around Jotunheim. He is a passionate advocate for the SDC to assume more political power in Sagittarius if only to improve the development and standard of living in the more depressed colonies (like Midgard). At one time he served as an infantryman in the EUSDF, and he has managed to maintain in good working order a surplus musclesuit from some old battledress armor to help him slog through the snow. Olaf Hansen Age: 66 Sex: Male Known Information: Owner and sole proprietor of Olaf's, a tavern and hotel in the colony town of Jotunheim on the planet Midgard in the HD+54 1018 System. Olaf is one of the original colonists to settle Midgard, and arrived at the scene of a gold rush in what has now become Jotunheim. The gold strike panned out faster than anyone predicted, but not before Olaf managed to obtain enough wealth to build his tavern in the center of town and purchase a few extra shares of the colony's stock. Consequently, even though Jotunheim is in an economic slump, he remains one of the wealthiest inhabitants, and has a few connections with offworld free traders who provide him with luxury goods. Olaf is an honest man in a world of thieves and liars, but he is not above dispensing a little vigilante justice where he thinks it will do the most good. Like Snorri Thorsen, Olaf desires the SDC to assume control of the system in order to inject some prosperity into Midgard's economy. Jurgen Haasek Age: 32 Sex: Male Known Information: Jurgen Haasek is the wealthiest man in the colony town of Jotunheim on the planet Midgard in the HD+54 1018 System. He came by his wealth in a similar manner to Olaf Hansen, by being one of the first to arrive on the scene when the Gold Rush started. Jurgen did not get rich in the Gold Rush by getting his hands dirty, but by buying up the claims of miners who had good digs but had run out of money to capitalize on them, and then hiring others from Bifrost and from passing ships to come work for him instead. Jurgen knows that he is a big fish in a very small pond, and entertains the idea of moving on to Bifrost soon and growing his power as well as his wealth. It irritates him to know that Olaf Hansen, the owner and proprieter of Jotunheim's tavern, has more shares (and thus votes) in the Midgard Colonial Development Corporation (the effective government of Midgard), a mistake he means to rectify as soon as he can find someone willing to sell their shares. Jurgen is used to getting what he wants in Jotunheim, and he has a habit of preying on women who live in town or who come in from offworld. He is unmarried, and has no desire to settle down. Rumors abound that he has murdered several women who have displeased him in some way, but with the Sheriff firmly in his back pocket, the chances of him being prosecuted should the rumors be true are just about non existent. Georg Lukas Age: 29 Sex: Male Known Information: Georg is part of a small group of offworlders (Carlos, Valery, and Grigory) living in the vicinity of Jotunheim on the planet Midgard. Their purpose on Midgard is unknown, though there is speculation based on the type of digging equipment Georg and his companions have been seen loading into their MV-51C Peregrine tilt-rotor that they are involved in some sort of mining venture. Georg and his companions are never short of cash, often paying in gold minted by the Bank of Sol. Georg himself is Ukrainian, and a bit of a horndog when it comes to attracting female attentions. He has admitted to Olaf at one point that he was in the Ukrainian Army for a few years as a robot pilot. He is usually very talkative, but when the conversation moves towards what he and his companions are doing on Midgard he quickly changes the subject. Carlos Ibiza Age: 34 Sex: Male Known Information: Carlos is part of the same group of men as Georg. He is the silent type, preferring to let others do the talking, but when he speaks, he has a pronounced Spanish accent. Carlos is generally seen in the company of Georg, though they rarely sit together or talk much, leaving the careful observer with the impression that Carlos has been tasked with the job of being Georg's babysitter. Valery Rostovich Age: 41 Sex: Male Known Information: Valery is very obviously Russian. In both his voice and his dour demeanor, as well as his choice of drink, he oozes Mother Russia from his pores. Valery is the pilot of the MV-51C Peregrine tilt-rotor used by the group he belongs to. He is generally tight-lipped about matters, and is happy to nurse along a stiff glass of ice cold vodka rather than engage in trivial conversation. His blue-grey eyes are hard and hawk like, and he can be seen carefully observing a room as he enters it. Grigory Dnieper Age: 39 Sex: Male Known Information: Grigory is Valery's drinking buddy, and it is obvious that they have been through a great deal of good times and bad together. Like Valery, Grigory is a hard man, with a hawk like gaze and a swift and sure appraisal of any room he enters. From their place at the bar in Olaf's tavern, one of the two is always turned to face away from the bar to watch the other's back. Sheriff Harald Ridderstolpe Age: 56 Sex: Male Known Information: Harald is the Sheriff of Jotunheim, a position he is believed to have gained as a result of Jurgen Haasek's aggressive campaigning on his behalf. He is a curious choice for the role of Sheriff, as he is non-confrontational, and while not corrupt in a strict sense, he is often unwilling to get too involved in the pursuit of his duties. As long as things in town are quiet, he is content. It is when "complications" arise that he can become irritable, as if the vague pangs of conscience are reminding him against his will of his sworn duties. Shen Kuo (Deceased) Age: 50 (at time of death) Sex: Male Known Information: Shen Kuo was the Ship's Master of the Corsair class privateer vessel operating under the name and registry of Dahan Feng Hao (AMC-241). He was killed following a battle between his ship and the Celestial class armed yacht Celestial Phoenix (AMC-127) on 13 September 2361. Found on his body in the wreckage of his shattered Bridge was a medallion indicating an affiliation with the Black Dragon Society. Li Shu Fei, one of the boarding party from the Celestial Phoenix to search the wreck after the battle, stated that he once served with Shen Kuo as a privateer during the Commerce War with Russia, and knew him as a psychopathic killer. In any event, it is certain that Shen Kuo's passing will be mourned by few. Yang Li Age: 46 Sex: Male Known Information: Yang Li was the First Officer aboard the Corsair class privateer vessel operating under the name and registry of Dahan Feng Hao (AMC-241). He was taken as a prisoner following a battle between his ship and the Celestial class armed yacht Celestial Phoenix (AMC-127) on 13 September 2361. Yang Li has spent a lifetime as a privateer for Manchuria fighting in the Commerce War with Russia. Reuben Bellows Age: 36 Sex: Male Known Information: Reuben served as an Engineers Mate (Logic Systems-1) aboard the SS Celestial Phoenix (AMC-127) until 27 September 2361, when he suddenly cashed out his wages and jumped ship on the planet Scherzo along with Jerry Salvia. He is suspected of being one of the saboteurs that had plagued the Celestial Phoenix in the Midgard System (HD+54 1018). Reuben is well known as a boisterous and outgoing man and an excellent technician, but also has a taste for cocaine and betting on Horseclaw races. He is widely known aboard ship for running a Craps game in the crew's habitat, where his skill at manipulating the coriolis forces of the spin hab to hit desired numbers is nearly legendary. Reuben was rescued from the custody of a man known only as Janos on 29 September 2361, shortly after the murder of his companion. He then became a prisoner aboard the Celestial Phoenix, where he faced criminal sanctions for sabotage and attempted murder. He agreed to help Mei Ling and her companions as much as possible with information in exchange for being marooned on the hellish planet Muspellheim in the HD+54 1018 System rather than be turned over to the hangman's noose on Fury. Jerry Salvia (Deceased) Age: 31 (at time of death) Sex: Male Known Information: Jerry served as an Engineers Mate (Logic Systems-2) aboard the SS Celestial Phoenix (AMC-127) until 27 September 2361, when he suddenly cashed out his wages and jumped ship on the planet Scherzo along with Reuben Bellows. He is suspected of being one of the saboteurs that had plagued the Celestial Phoenix in the Midgard System (HD+54 1018). Jerry is something of a loner aboard ship, and other than his nominal superior in the Engineering Section, Reuben Bellows, he has no friends. Jerry's body was discovered in a pile of straw in a horseclaw stable at Forte Downs racetrack on 28 September 2361. He had been murdered by a man known only as Janos, who was apparently involved with the plot to kill Mei Ling. Captain Jan Mercer Age: 50 Sex: Male Known Information: Captain Jan Mercer is the second son of Frederick Mercer, President of Mercer Heavy Industries and a founding partner of the Sagittarius Development Corporation. He has commanded the Bonaventure class explorer Enterprise (AMC-003) since 2353, and led one of the original ten survey teams in Sagittarius. He is a just man and a capable captain and explorer, with a passion for the ideals of Dr. Gavin Aurimas and the SDC that make him highly respected outside his own family, and something of a self-righteous crusader to his kin. Janos Age: Unknown, appears to be between 35 and 50 Sex: Male Known Information: Janos is the nom de guerre of a well-connected Fixer for the Jovian criminal syndicates. He is believed to have been involved in several politically motivated killings in Guangzhou and in Guangzou's African and offworld spheres of influence, possibly acting as a go-between for Manchurian Intelligence, and as a result came to Sagittarius to wait for the heat on him to fade. He is of Greek heritage, and there are rumors of him being a police detective in the EU when he was younger. He appears to be deeply involved with the plots against Fa Zheng De and his daughter Mei Ling, perhaps once again acting as a go-between for his old pay masters. Janos was caught murdering Jerry Salvia on surveillance footage at the Forte Downs horseclaw track in Forte, on the planet Scherzo in the SAG+55 2007 System. He also had Reuben Bellows as his hostage/prisoner when he was captured by Mei Ling's entourage on 29 September 2361. Janos has since been offered a similar deal as Reuben to cooperate or be turned over to Jan Mercer for trial. Janos chose to cooperate. He has since gone to ground on Fury, as he is aware that he is now a liability to Kuan Yin and will be killed by her agents at the first opportunity. Kuan Yin Age: Believed to be over 100, but uses life extension and agathic treatments to appear much younger Sex: Female Known Information: Kuan Yin is the nom de guerre of the former Viceroy of Shenyang, Manchuria's richest and most prosperous colony (as well as a general in the Manchurian Army and a reputed crime lord over several Triad mafias to boot), until she suffered a humiliating reversal of fortunes after the Anglo-American special forces raid in 2351 exposed Manchuria's lies regarding the disposition of Western Alliance troops. It is learned that at some point soon after Sagittarius was opened up to colonization in 2357, Kuan Yin came to Jin Xian and restarted her criminal empire. Kuan Yin, through her stakes in Dahan Corporation's Sagittarius division and the Jin Xian Commonwealth, has come to control the commerce in a large swath of Human Sagittarius, and saw Fa Enterprises as competition, and Fa Zheng De as a personal enemy after breaking with the Black Dragon Society. She has succeeded in having Zheng De killed (by his own hand, no less), and the break up of his company, Fa Enterprises, but has many loose ends to sew up - particularly in regards to Ben Fang Long and Janos, both of whom she has tried to have assassinated. Leticia Mercer-Aurimas Age: 98 - Leticia is an Amaranth Tweak, and thus appears to be in her mid to late twenties. Sex: Female Known Information: Leticia is the wife of Joachim Mercer, Frederick Mercer's eldest son and the leading effort behind the Mercer Compact. She is a socialite and a celebrity on Fury, one of the few of Gavin Aurimas' six children to maintain a public presence. She laughs off the scandalous rumors regarding her father and her other family members, and is quite proud of her daughter Gwendolyne, who wishes to join her uncle Jan Mercer aboard a Bonaventure class explorer in spite of the rest of the Mercer family's desire that she help run the family business from Fury. Emil Lafarge Age: 54 Sex: Male Known Information: Emil Lafarge is believed to be a freelance corporate spy specializing in thefts and hostile acquistion of employees. He prefers to do as much as possible through intermediaries and hired guns, so when he has to see to a job personally he is equal measures angry and paranoid. A certified nebbish, Lafarge hates routine social interactions much less full blown confrontations, and will avoid personal contact whenever possible. His employers simply consider him careful and prudent, those few who truly know him realize he's damaged goods. Jerome Delancy Age: 49 Sex: Male Known Information: Jerome is open and outgoing, everything that Emil Larfarge is not. Jerome claims to be many things, from an adventurer and fortune seeker to a bounty hunter and skip tracer. He has already seen a great deal of Sagittarius, having come through the Stargate in 2357 when it first opened to the public. A careful observer of Delancy may note that he seems to have had some police training in his past, but that is a subject he will never admit to. Kahoku Keilani Age: 21 Sex: Male Known Information: Kahoku came to Pu'uhonua in 2357 with his parents when he was 16 years old. A native of the big island of Hawaii, United States, Earth, Kahoku had never been in space prior to his journey to Sagittarius. He has adapted well to his new home on Pu'uhonua, though having tasted modern life among the stars he is a little jaded at the prospect of spending the rest of his life in enforced primitivism for the sake of preserving a culture he hardly felt a part of before. Waipahu Age: Unknown, looks early 20s Sex: Male Known Information: Waipahu is the handle for another of Pu'uhonua's disaffected youth. He prefers to stay at the starport and hang out with the spaceship crews and the tourists rather than spend his days fishing and gathering in a deliberate stone age existence with his family. He longs to leave the planet, but lacking an education beyond high school and any real aptitude (much less ambition) for technical skills, his odds of convincing a ship's captain to take him on as an apprentice are somewhere between slim and none. Perhaps even Waipahu knows this, which is why he is always coming up with get rich quick schemes so he can buy his way off the planet. Recently, he may have just stumbled upon the means to do that, as he has come across a curious new psychoactive drug that could be a huge seller in an unregulated market if he can just find people to distribute it for him off planet. Captain Diego Goya (Fate Unknown) Age: 64 Sex: Male Known Information: A ship's master with Ceres Metals Corporation, Diego has commanded the armed merchant Ceres Mercury (AMC-253) for five years, and has been with the company for 35 years. A good commander with an excellent reputation with his colleagues, Diego is an ideal example for a loyal company employee. If he has faults, it is that he is too forgiving of transgressions and quick to forget a slight even if no apology has been offered. His starship was listed as missing on 2 February 2362, and his fate is unknown. He was last seen in the Paydirt system after having hired on new crew members for his shorthanded staff. Barak Otumbo Age: 29 Sex: Male Known Information: Barak Otumbo signed on to the crew of the Ceres Mercury (AMC-253) on 10 October 2361 at Avignon Above, where he was previously employed as a stevedore along with his friend 'Pierre' Letourneau. Barak was an avowed socialist, convinced that the people and resources of Sagittarius were being exploited once again by a select few for their exclusive benefit. In spite of the rhetoric, Barak had a taste for the finer things in life, and according to Pierre, never turned his nose up at The Man's money when it came his way. Among some of the things Barak left behind on Avignon Above when he took the job on the Ceres Mercury were books and video with nihilstic overtones, some of which sounded very similar to the doctrine preached by the End of History. Barak was spotted in Copper Canyon on 6 May 2362 by Michael Teach while fighting off an ambush of miners loyal to Ted Cruikshank. 'Pierre' Paul Letourneau Age: 33 Sex: Male Known Information: An employee with the space station staff at Avignon Above, Pierre works as a stevedore, handling the resupply of consumables and hotel loads for spacecraft docked at the station. A drifter who has temporarily put down roots at Avignon, Pierre has fallen in with his share of interesting characters, including a self-professed revolutionary socialist named Barak Otumbo. Pierre is somewhat flexible in his opinions and tends to adopt the beliefs of those around him if they are strongly held. When he shared a flat with Barak, he joined the revolutionary socialist choir, even if he was somewhat conscious of the irony of working for a megacorporation (Fabrique Quebecois/Exo-Total-Elf) at the same time. Natalya Podkorov Age: 42 Sex: Female Known Information: Natalya is the chief executive at the Ceres Metals Corporation Mining Station on Paydirt in the HM+36 2309 System. An attractive if overly self-conscious woman, she is so driven to succeed that she often becomes a victim of her own ambition, missing or deliberately ignoring opportunities for a mutually satisfying compromise in favor of an all or nothing approach to everything, from her job to her personal life. She has grown weary of Ted Cruikshank's attempts to turn her employees against the company and stirring up the wildcat miners with warmed over socialist nonsense, and in her typically overreactive fashion has ordered her staff to shoot the troublemaker on sight. This has pushed the wildcats even farther from her side then they were before, and if she were the bloodthirsty type, she might have taken more direct action against them when minor acts of sabotage started occuring against the Habitat Dome. At the moment she is deathly afraid that James Farrior will find some overlooked problem at the facility and cashier her on the spot, and his interest in the wildcats, and Ted Cruikshank in particular has her paranoid and terrified at the same time. 'Terrible' Ted Cruikshank Age: 52 Sex: Male Known Information: Ted Cruikshank is the personal nemesis of the three executives running the corporate mines on Paydirt. Originally from New Jersey, United States, Earth, Ted has wandered across Europe and into Aztlan, then at some point found himself in a commune on Tycho Colony, Luna, where his politics took a hard turn to the left and he got into 'direct action' operations against corporations and governments he felt were oppressive and rapacious. There are rumors that he was involved in a bombing on Mars in 2358 which left several vice presidents of the Weyland-Yutani corporation dead, along with nearly 200 others when their habitat dome was breached in multiple places simultaneously. Whether or not this is true, Weyland-Yutani's executives in the Orion Arm believed it, and quietly offered bounties on the man's head. At the moment his presence on Paydirt seems to be insurance against getting assassinated, it's remote enough to make finding him difficult and expensive, yet he is still within striking distance of three megacorporations' assets. He is currently agitating for a miner's union amongst the corporate employees as well as price guarantees for ore mined by the wildcats and no 'profiteering' on the goods sold to them in the Corporate Domes' general stores. The union idea isn't getting very far, although it has caused tensions during contract renewal times, but the price supports and anti-gouging stance has resonated with the wildcats, who have complied with his embargo requests even if many of them don't agree with his politics. Frank Church Age: 55 Sex: Male Known Information: Frank Church has become a permanent resident of a ramshackle tumbletown on Paydirt anchored on one side by his broken down lander, and by Chun Bai's Drop Capsule on the other. Frank is known far and wide among the wildcats on Paydirt as a genius prospector with a preternatural gift for sniffing out rich lodes of ore - he is credited, perhaps even accurately, as the one who struck the big iridium lode that brought the Royal Dutch Shell company to Paydirt - and even deep into his decline he is sometimes still able to make a big strike, the rights to which he will quickly lose to gambling or sell off for as little as a few bottles of booze and a whore. Frank is a foul and wretched drunk, a state he finds himself in more and more often these days, and it is becoming apparent that his alcoholism, his poor diet, and years of lacking radiation protection from passing out drunk in the inflatable hostile environment tent that adjoins his lander have taken their toll on him physically as well as mentally. His skin and eyes show clear signs of advanced jaundice, with all of the underlying liver damage that implies, and his memory even in those rare moments of sobriety is starting to fade. Marie Saint-Jean, desperate for financial support that she is, won't touch him. Frank's only constant companion is Greg O'Doyle, who happily enough makes moonshine with a vacuum still out of sugar from rations he trades with miners in exchange for his 'jet juice.' If caught in a good mood, Frank may talk about the days before Ted Cruikshank showed up - however halcyon they may sound now is no simple exaggeration of the hatred he feels towards Terrible Ted. There is a persistant rumor that Frank has a fortune in precious metals squirreled away, either inside his lander or buried somewhere out in the boundless cold desert of Paydirt. Greg O'Doyle (Deceased) Age: 48 (at time of death) Sex: Male Known Information: One of many hundreds who came to Paydirt after the news of the big iridium strikes in 2358, Greg has been reduced to abject poverty with no means of support save his vacuum still's dubious product and no way to get off of the planet he has come to so desperately hate. He has no spaceship skills and little technical vocation, one of the reasons he remains stranded on Paydirt even with men like Diego Goya searching for crew to hire. He remains one of Frank Church's only companions on Paydirt, and will occasionally prod him to sober up long enough to venture out and prospect, though these ventures have become increasingly unsuccessful as Frank's decline continues, and the Corporates pay so little for unrefined ore and are unwilling to purchase a claim they have no time or resources to investigate the veracity of. When asked, Greg will not comment much on the rumor that Frank has a secret treasure trove of refined precious metals hidden somewhere, dismissing it with a swig of his jet juice and a remark to the effect of, 'if he's so goddamned rich, why the hell is he still here?' Greg was killed in the crossfire between a Weyland-Yutani strike team sent to capture Chun Bai and Chun Bai's own bodyguards on 6 May 2362. Marie Saint-Jean Age: 39 Sex: Female Known Information: Marie came to Paydirt with her husband Kemal and their son Kalid during the iridium rush of '58. They were part of joint claim with some mutual friends who had emigrated to Sagittarius from France, and were enjoying some small success when a mining accident killed her husband and several others. Her last remaining friend betrayed her and sold off their claim, then promptly disappeared off world with the proceeds from the sale. Marie was left destitute and a widow with a young son to care for, and her only options turned towards providing a hostel for traveling wildcatters as well as prostitution when things got really desperate, such as being down to their last oxygen candle or their last ration pack. She was once pretty, but going on four years without hope has taken its toll on her. When she isn't taking care of a client, she is busy watching Frank Church's place for sign that he has finally died, having convinced herself that the rumors regarding his fortune are true, and planning on being the first one to take a look to find out. Chun Bai (a.k.a Jiang Sing) Age: 96 Sex: Male Known Information: Chun Bai is the longest staying permanent resident of the tumbletown nearest to the Ceres Metals Dome, having lived in an abandond drop capsule from the Iridium Rush of '58 since he acquired it in a trade from a failed prospector in exchange for a modestly earning claim. Chun Bai realized that even if the boom continued, the real money to be made on Paydirt if you weren't a corporate type was in acting as a broker between free traders and the miners. Miners would always need a place to sell their refined metal and the corporations paid a pittance for outside sources of product, based on their own low extraction prices they incurred with their extensive automation systems and mass production. Likewise, miners would always need supplies, spare parts, and tools, and the corporate stores charged outrageous prices to drive the wildcats out of business. Likewise, the free traders appreciated a reliable source for their wares, someone who would be there month after month, and who wouldn't disappear with the next gust of bitter Paydirt wind. Thus Chun Bai became a fixture of the tumbletown as miners came and went. At first Frank Church's renown brought people in hoping for good advice or a tip or two, but as Church got drunker and drunker, it was Chun Bai and his general store and his regular contacts with free traders to buy metals at reasonable prices (even after Chun's 'brokerage fee') that maintained the tumbletown. Chun sees himself as the leader of the tumbletown, and though he is a shrewd bargainer, it is with a mixture of pity and noblesse oblige that he will occasionally donate goods to Marie Saint-Jean so that she and her son don't suffocate or starve or freeze to death. Chun Bai shows signs that he is connected to the more militant miners' factions, particularly the ones most influenced by the firebrand rhetoric of Ted Cruikshank, and is rumored to have brokered deals to supply them with heavy weapons and even light combat robots to destroy the corporate domes and take the rich mines for 'the people' of Paydirt. If these rumors are true, then it is equally true that Chun Bai is smart enough to realize that any such 'people's revolution' on Paydirt would bring terrible retribution upon the revolutionaries from the corporations, and even the SDC itself, making Chun Bai the most cynically mercenary man on the planet. Weyland-Yutani security executive William McBride identified Chun Bai's real identity as Jiang Sing, a freelance fixer, one time revolutionary, and middle man for Manchuria's intelligence agency. McBride suggests that Jiang Sing may be acting under the direction of Dahan Corporation, and is possibly supporting Cruikshank's revolution and the attack on Capital Main using the stolen Ceres Mercury (AMC-253), in order to destabilize the SDC and make Jin Xian the major power in Sagittarius. Jace Boland Age: 39 Sex: Male Known Information: Jace Boland is the owner and proprieter of the big tavern and saloon in Copper Canyon, the biggest independent settlement on Paydirt. Jace, like many of the wildcats and independents on the planet, came during the Iridium Rush of '58 started by the discoveries of Frank Church. Unlike many of the miners who went broke and became stranded on the planet, Jace parleyed early minor success in his efforts into a relatively profitable business supplying the remaining miners with entertainment. Jace has no family in Sagittarius, having left his home on Terranova after dropping out of college to work a succession of jobs as a miner and rockjack. Jace doesn't think much of armchair revolutionary Pym Schuyler, and still less of his master, Ted Cruikshank. As far as he is concerned, Paydirt would be a better place to live if Cruikshank and his rabble rousers would redirect their efforts towards improving the colony rather than blame others for their misfortune. Jace sits on the informal board of 'town founders' that regulates the settlement (in as much as Copper Canyon can be regulated). Pym Schuyler Age: 32 Sex: Male Known Information: Pym Schuyler studied economics, philosophy, and politics at the University of Tycho on Luna, Sol. Since graduating from the university, Pym has put his education into the service of various revolutionary socialist and left-wing activist causes in Orion, particularly in protesting such interstellar corporations as Weyland-Yutani and Dahan. Pym was 'radicalized' (in his own words) on Paydirt after his failure to organize the miners, both corporate and wildcat, and soon fell in with Ted Cruikshank. Pym is a devotee of 23rd century nanotopian Samuel Urquhart, and is convinced that once the virtual monopoly on resources and information is broken (which must logically involve the evisceration of the megacorporations, who have no interest in seeing those monopolies ended), humanity will enter into a true post-scarcity civilization, and enlightenment and universal prosperity will follow. Not originally a proponent of violence as a means to achieve his ends, his frustration at his failure to organize the workers, coupled with the heavy handed tactics of Weyland-Yutani and Ceres Metals on Paydirt, has pushed him to embrace the radical policies of Cruikshank and (in weaker moments) the nihilism of the End of History. Bob White Age: 66 Sex: Male Known Information: Bob White is the owner and operator of the mineral refineries in Copper Canyon that turn miners' ore into refined metals for sale to the Free Traders who visit Paydirt. Despite his virtual monopoly at Copper Canyon, his rates are not unreasonable, though he is being continually pressured by Ted Cruikshank and his minions to cut his prices to the point of reducing his profit margin down to 1% or less. Needless to say, Bob isn't thrilled by Cruikshank's proposal, but boycotts of his refinery by miners under the radical's sway have forced him to cut his rates somewhat anyway. Bob is slowly acquiring enough wealth to leave Paydirt and retire to Fury in comfort, but is loathe to sell his business to someone more easily pushed around. Bob also runs the environmental and recycling systems for the main gallery of Copper Canyon, and as such also charges the residents and guests a small air and water tax. Bob sits on the informal board of 'town founders' that regulates the settlement (in as much as Copper Canyon can be regulated). William McBride Age: 36 Sex: Male Known Information: William McBride is an executive in charge of security for the Weyland-Yutani corporation. The unrest and acts of sabotage against the Weyland-Yutani dome on Paydirt (HM+36 2309 System) have brought Mr. McBride to the planet, though once it was determined that Ted Cruikshank was involved, his need to capture or kill the revolutionary was clear. McBride is not a man to mince words, and though his loyalty to Weyland-Yutani is unquestioned, he is aware of the need for cooperation between the corporations and the various colonial governments to prevent a collapse of the fledgling Sagittarius civilization. |
