The Encyclopedia contains
information
regarding the Sagittarius Arm and its inhabitants as well as relevant
historical knowledge of people, places, and events that led to its
colonization. Entries are cross-referenced as much as practical
to allow free-form browsing of the databanks so that visitors may
explore the spiral arm at their own pace. Users may begin their

| Paydirt Paydirt, in this instance, refers to planting soil, usually imported from Earth, that contains the microorganism ecology and suitable organic and inorganic compound proportions for planting crops or other Earth-based plant life. This allows useful plants to be sown in biospheres that are less compatible with Earth-based life. Paydirt is too expensive to be used exclusively for any but the smallest plots of land, and so the usual procedure for using it is to sterilize the topsoil of the desired plot of land using gamma rays, remove undesired taint compounds if necessary, and then mix the sterilized native topsoil with the paydirt. This mixture is allowed to mature as the paydirt microorganisms colonize the new soil and convert it to new paydirt. This soil may then be returned for planting to the land. Cross-contamination of the returned soil is inevitable where isolation techniques are not used, but generally speaking soil that has been converted to paydirt is better established against instrusions and remains viable against all but the most insidious chemical or biological taints. Nevertheless, farmers are wise to hold some of their paydirt in reserve in case the soil needs to be reconverted. Earth based paydirt from a notable agricultural region is the most preferred and consequently most expensive form of paydirt available, but paydirts from other compatible biospheres are also valuable. This is especially true when planting crops or providing fodder for livestock native to another planet. Terranovan soil is absolutely necessary for some native edible fungi, and the soil of Liberty is one of the most Earth compatible soils yet discovered. |

| Paydirt
(Colony) HM+36 2309 III A, or Paydirt, as it is now known, is the inhabited world in a double planet binary pair. First settled in 2357 at the height of the colony rush after Sagittarius was opened to the public, it is the source for a large iridium strike vital to the production of stardrives as well as other ultratech machinery. Paydirt is being mined by small wildcat prospecting groups as much it is by corporate production, and the law is a very tenuous thing on the planet. See Paydirt's Sagittarius Colonial Atlas Entry for more information. |

| Personality
Construct The emulation of a person who has submitted themselves to the process of Uploading. The legality of personality constructs is a dubious one. They are not considered to be the person they emulate in any legal (or in most cases even moral) sense. At best they are the property of the Transhumanist foundation that supports the construct and its robot bodies. Personality constructs are typically stored on the same data storage mediums used in other applications requiring security, durabillity, and resistance to ionizing radiation. Although this is highly illegal and punishable by immediate and total destruction of every known copy, multiple copies of personality constructs may run independently of each other, though this will lead to personality divergence over time as each leads seperate 'lives.' Uploads who use multiple personality constructs will often merge them at a later date to maintain continuity and fidelity of self over time. |

| Pu'uhuonua Pu'uhonua translates roughly as "refuge" in the Hawaiian language, and it is native Hawaiians who make up the bulk of this watery world's population. The colony was set up under a personal development grant from Gavin Aurimas, who paid for passage to the world for over 500 native Hawaiians who wanted to start a new home far from Earth, that they might preserve what was left of their culture. See Pu'huonua's Sagittarius Colonial Atlas Entry for more information. |
