ENCYCLOPEDIA - L
The Encyclopedia contains information regarding the Sagittarius Arm and its inhabitants as well as relevant historical knowledge of people, places, and events that led to its colonization.  Entries are cross-referenced as much as practical to allow free-form browsing of the databanks so that visitors may explore the spiral arm at their own pace.  Users may begin their search by clicking on the letters below corresponding to their items of interest.

L9 class Logistics Tender

The L9 is an orbital tender, a low endurance craft used to transfer cargo, propellant, and even passengers from space stations to waiting spacecraft.  The L9 was first introduced in 2264 by Estrella Esperanza shipyards of Terranova, Alpha Centauri A, though the concept and the design itself can trace their lineage all the way back to the small craft of the 21st century.

More information on the L9 class can be found here.

Long Jump Stardrive

Long Jump stardrive was created in 2288 by Dr. Gavin Aurimas of Solarian Space-Time Engineering (SSTE).  Long Jump solved the problems of range inherent with Short Jump stardrive, which is limited to about 10.758 light years for a reliable jump, and possible jumps of up to 11.04 light-years with some element of risk.  Long Jump wormhole detection with potential wells involves calculations of a complexity several orders of magnitude greater than for Short Jump, and requires more energy be fed into the metric within the same incredibly short time frame.  This has the practical effect of requiring larger and faster drive computers as well as a direct antimatter energy conversion system to provide the 'kick' to the space-time metric to inflate the wormhole for traversal.  These limitations have set a baseline for minimum displacement of Long Jump equipped starships to about 10,000 metric tons.  Smaller starships cannot fit Long Jump systems as currently constructed without sacrificing payload to the point of uselessness.

The theoretical range of a Long Jump system is thought to be within the range of hundreds or even thousands of light years.  In practice, Long Jump systems are unreliable past about 33 light-years, mostly due to limitations in detecting and isolating useful wormholes connecting points in space-time more distant than this.  It is believed that, given a computer with sufficient processing and memory, as well as stellar cartographic surveys of sufficiently high accuracy, Long Jumps with an intergalactic range are possible.  Such capabilities are so far beyond the achievement of human civilization as to be considered impossible.

Long Jump systems are restricted to the militaries of the Western Alliance by contract with the SSTE.  The SSTE at Gavin Aurimas' behest has circumvented this agreement twice - once to equip the National Geographic Society's Pleiades expedition starship Maia, and once to equip the Sagittarius Development Corporation's Bonaventure class starships.  In each case, the transfer of technology was justified by leasing the stardrives to the interested parties, each of which were part of well publicized non-military exploration efforts.  The Western Alliance governments were sufficiently mollified by these measures as to voice no more than token protest.  Long Jumps undertaken by starships equipped with this capability are actually rare given the expense in the form of antimatter required to execute a Long Jump, and typically are reserved for emergency situations demanding immediate response to a remote location.  Long Jump equipped starships are prohibited from transiting an SSTE controlled Stargate as part of the contract, which in practice has denied them from every stargate in existence.
