| Jewel Jewel is the fifth planet in the HM+41 0955 B System. It has a large population and is administered by the Sagittarius Development Corporation. It is most notable for the right and left handed chirality of the native amino acids found in its biosphere, which makes compatibility with Earth-based life challenging. See Jewel's Sagittarius Colonial Atlas Entry for more information. |

Commonwealth 金銑聯邦 Political Organization consisting of Jin Xian, its moons, and several systems in Sagittarius that have pledged mutual free trade, economic development, and defense pacts with each other. The Jin Xian Commonwealth is seen by many as a counterweight to the emerging political power of the SDC through its advancement of the Mercer Compact. The organization is led by a council consisting of representatives of each member world plus the Dahan corporation. Member worlds maintain their own internal governments. |

| Jovian Tweak Jovian genetic 'Tweaks' are adapted to living on cold worlds with thick or even dense atmospheres with high concentrations of methane, powerful winds, and low sunlight. They have very tolerant biochemistries compared to other human genotypes, and can function in high gravity environments. Jovian tweaks tend to be shorter than average, with thick powerful legs and strong backs. Their skin is sleek, and they carry a thin layer of subcutaneous fat all over their bodies rather than store fat in the normal places such as the abdomen and thighs. Such harsh living conditions have tempered them into aloof and often fatalistic people, and they don’t get along well with outsiders. The original Jovian tweaks were created by Biosynth corporation in 2242 as interstellar surveys revealed worlds that posed difficulties for normal human genotypes. Several basic Jovian genotypes have since been developed, and the term Jovian Tweak is now a generic term to denote any genotype suitable for living on a Jovian world type. |

| The Jovian
League The Jovian League is a confederation of allied colonies and organizations in the Jupiter system of moons. They are pledged to mutual defense and free trade, and generally follow a philosophy of government somewhere between libertarianism and anarchy. The Jupiter system of moons in the mid to late 21st centuries was very much a lawless place. The governments of Earth and the megacorporations had not bothered with outer solar system, as Luna and the near Earth asteroids provided everything they needed for space development. Mars was a place for well-heeled dreamers. The combination of relatively inexpensive access to space via beanstalk and the advent of useful nuclear thermal propulsion had made it possible for the daring and the insane to travel to Jupiter and establish permanent colonies on the main four moons of the solar system's biggest planet. These colonists, adventurers, and prospectors, many months of travel away from Earth, often squabbled over resources or competed to serve the rockjacks in the Belt or the terraformers on Mars with volatiles. It soon became obvious that it was necessary to reduce the amount of in-fighting and foster a sense of cooperation among the inhabitants of the Jupiter system. They were vulnerable enough from the hazards of living around Jupiter, and did not need to be at each other's throats. The first alliances were made between the cis-Jovian haulers, pilots and roughnecks who transported water and other volatiles from the moons to the orbital habitats and to the folks living in the Belt. The haulers in turn began forming associations with the technicians and the long-hauler freighters who could maintain their ships and equipment and who brought spare parts from Earth and purchased refined metals and volatiles from the Jovians. People who threatened haulers or the techs that supported them soon found themselves facing the entire group. An embargo of services was usually the preferred weapon against troublemakers, who often could not do without the support, but in several cases things escalated into violence. Crude missiles and mining lasers were put to good effect in these instances. The colonies on the four major moons depended on the haulers and the technicians in orbit as well, and this mutual web of support took on a complicated system of shifting feudal ties and familial obligations. When Manchuria settled the first government sponsored colonies on Europa, such as Kanghua 康華, the Jovians realized that they needed to unite under a more durable arrangement. A conclave of haulers, technicians, miners, and colonists met on Ganymede in 2074 to discuss just such an arrangement, and after three weeks of arguments (and several fist fights), cobbled togther what they called the Jovian League. The purpose of the League was to provide a unified front against nationalist aggression from any Great Power. The Jovians were independents. They had come to Jupiter to start new lives away from Earth and its petty intrigues and conflicts, and did not welcome Earth coming to them. Mars' involvement with the megacorporations provided a taste of what was to come, and a very clear sense that if they did not stand together, they would all hang separately was in the minds of all Jovians at this time. Jovian support for Martian shipbuilding efforts was provided due to this very fear. While the Martian Alliance, with Jovian help, had firmly established their sovereignty, by 2107 they would realize that their fears of nationlist aggression were not unfounded. The Kanghua colony had grown closer to the Jovian League during its existence, and the isolation of the moon from Manchuria allowed its colonists to enjoy a sense of freedom and privacy they had never known on Earth. Guangzhou intelligence agents operating in the Jovian system were quick to encourage rebellious ideas with the colony, and in 2107 the colony's director, Yang Weimin, approached the Europan representative of the League with an offer to renounce their parent country and join the Jovians. Kanghua was a well developed colony with access to the latest technological advancements and modern equipment. It was an offer too tempting to ignore, and the League agreed. Manchuria did not stand for Kanghua's disloyalty, and declared their intention to use force to bring their colony to heel. The Jovian League was confident that they could send the Manchurians packing if they tried to invade Jupiter space. They had the home advantage, were far closer to their lines of supply, and had plenty of experience dealing with the hostile electromagnetic environment of Jupiter. Any attack into Jupiter would require the invading fleet to perform a braking maneuver to establish orbit, and they would be vulnerable to attack during this time. Furthermore, at the time of Kanghua's defection there were no dedicated interplanetary warships in existence. Any fight would be Manchuria's armed merchants against theirs, and the Jovians had much more experience in that kind of fight. The Jovians badly miscalculated the Manchurian response. They were also unaware of the handful of interplanetary cruisers that had been recently constructed, and who were now tasked with returning Kanghua to the fold. In the Manchurian ruling clique's mind, if the Jovian League wished to get involved, they would pay the price. The result was the Manchuria-Jovian War, the first interplanetary war. The war went well for the Jovians at first, as they achieved a decisive victory against the Manchurian squadron tasked with invading Jupiter space. The Manchurians responded with a blockade of Earth and Cis-Lunar space, prohibiting any Jovian freighter from vitally needed trade. The Martian Alliance repaid their debts to the Jovians by reflagging Jovian freighters and offering technological assistance. Even so, the Manchurians built up a gigantic fleet to teach the Jovians a lesson, and the League was nearly destroyed in 2111. They were simply too few in numbers and industrial base to compete with a Great Power like Manchuria. Only the intervention of Mars and the Western Democracies saved the League from total destruction, and the ensuing peace agreement in 2112 saw them cut off from Europa forever. The Jovians have maintained a mutual antagonism with Manchuria ever since. While they are forbidden to colonize Europa, they have extensively infiltrated the moon through a criminal syndicate that has become known as the Jovian Mafia. With the advent of interstellar travel in the 23rd century, Jupiter, like Mars and the Belt, started seeing its importance in the universe diminished. Before the Adventurer III's trip to Alpha Centauri mankind was confined to one solar system, with finite resources and space to live in. In the interstellar age those restraints were gone, and people on Earth who wished to go into space hardly spared a thought for places like Jupiter. The last fifty years have seen a great deal of migration from Jupiter and its surroundings into interstellar space. Sagittarius has become a new frontier for many of these Jovian expatriates - a new land of lawlessness and adventure that stirs their hearts with the old tales of their great-grandparents in the wild frontier days of the late 21st century. |

| Joytoy Joyboys and Joygirls are the ultimate hedonists for hire, having taken the arts of pleasure to dizzying heights. Most are Tweaked in some way, with pheromone enhancements being a common modification, and many also take on Exotic mods. They are the absolute must-have party accessory for the rich and shameless. They are hired for their intense beauty, magnetic charisma, and natural skills in the art of pleasure for the sake of pleasure. Paradoxically, a first rate Joygirl or Joyboy is so exotic, so sensual, and so preternaturally sexual, that they become virtually unapproachable by mere mortals. Popular media frequently invoke the Joytoy as a romantic foil, a symbol of the decadence of the super-rich, and even as entertainment figures in their own right. |
