| Gagarin (AMC-007) Eighth starship of the Bonaventure class Heavy Explorer. Named for 20th Century Russian astronaut Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space. Keel laid 18 May 2352, Commissioned 31 March 2353. Gagarin was built as a Block III model and has not needed an extended refit as earlier starships of its class have. Gagarin participated in Expeditions ONE through SIX. For more information on the class, click here. |

| Gateway Star system in the Sagittarius Arm of the galaxy linked to the Orion Arm by a stable traversable wormhole Stargate. No habitable planets. First explored in 2355, and used as a base of operations for the Sagittarius Development Corporation for further exploration of the Sagittarius Arm. Since the collapse of the stargate in 2361, Gateway's importance to the SDC has been diminished. Joachim Mercer has lobbied for the system to become the base of operations for the Armada of the Mercer Compact. See Gateway's Sagittarius Colonial Atlas Entry for more information. |

| Gateway
Station Original base of operations for the Sagittarius Development Corporation in the Gateway system. Gateway Station is heavily armed to protect the Stargate linking Sagittarius with Orion. The station was spared from destruction when the Stargate collapsed in 2361 as it was decoupled from its co-orbit with the Stargate to allow for deflation, and was on the other side of the Gateway primary when the crash occured. | Guangzhou
Directorate 廣州 董事會 One of the Earth's Great Powers, composed of the old Chinese provinces of Fujian, Guangdong, Jiangxi, Guangxi, Hunan, and Taiwan. Capitol city of Guangzhou in the Guangdong province. The Guangzhou Directorate is an Oligarchy of Chinese megacorporations that rule a nominal federal style republic. Government is divided into an Upper House composed of the boards of directors for the eight founding megacorporations, and a Lower House composed of elected representatives among shareholders of lesser corporations. The national government sets foreign policy, defends the country, and sets taxation and regulatory policies for Guangzhou. Civil and criminal matters, and municipal and district services are provided by democratically elected provincial governments. Generally speaking, the guiding principal of Guangzhou is 'What's good for business is good for Guangzhou.' Guangzhou was formed during the 2nd Chinese Civil War of the mid 21st century, breaking away from the People's Republic of China in a sundering which formed their principal antagonist, Manchuria. The wealthy, rapidly growing southern coastal provinces and the great corporations that prospered there were weary of taking direction from Beijing, and tired of even the weak facade of Communism that still clung to the state. Democracy movements were inciting crackdowns in the cities, and in the countryside the people were fed up with the corruption of the Chinese Communist Party. The southern provinces, which included the special economic zones of Hong Kong and Macau, responded by issuing reforms that Beijing forbade. When Aztlan seized the Panama Canal in 2052, the People's Liberation Army, which owned and controlled the corporation that administered the canal, was cut off from a major source of income. The southern provinces were heavily taxed both to punish them for their insolence and to make up for the losses into the PLA's coffers. These taxes were sounded rejected by the Eight Prosperous Corporations, and when the ruling clique in the capitol was publically ignored by the southern provinces, the People's Liberation Army was mobilized to crush them. What the ruling clique in Beijing did not count on was that most of the PLA's Air Force and Rocket Forces were based in the coastal provinces to threaten Taiwan and keep the U.S. Navy at a respectful distance in the South China Sea. Many of these units mutinied against the government and launched attacks against the north instead. Likewise, most of the civilian Chinese orbitals at L4 declared their allegience to the south. A pitched battle raged on land, in the air, at sea, and even in orbit for several months as China sought to tear itself apart. The Eight Prosperous Corporations devoted all of their efforts into keeping the southern provinces free, and in a staggering blow to the PLA, coopted seventy percent of China's nuclear arsenal through lavish bribes and daring theft. Armed with nuclear weapons, the Eight Corporations threatened to nuke the cities of Beijing, Shanghai, Jianan, Nanjing, and Shenyang if the PRC didn't accept an armistice and recognize the independence of the south. The PRC had no choice but to agree to an armistice, but recognition did not come for centuries after the fact. In the political chaos and infighting that followed, the Chinese Communist Party utterly collapsed and was replaced by a clique of Manchurian hardliners that set about reorganizing what was left of China into a state that could bring Guangzhou to heel and restore China to one nation and one people. While the north was wracked with political convulsions in the fallout of the war, the south quickly consolidated its positions and sought out allies. India was one of the first countries to recognize the southern provinces' independence, followed warily by Indonesia and Thailand. The Eight Corporations, as the sole possessors of the nuclear weapons that had won their freedom, formed a national government aimed at preserving independence. Democracy was encouraged at the local levels and in spite of some protests about replacing one master for another, most of the south's population went along, glad to get what they had out of the war. Taiwan entered into negotiations to join Guangzhou in 2069, having been satisfied that the new state would hold fast against any new threat of war from Manchuria. When Taiwan was accepted in 2070, the United States formally recognized Guangzhou and declared that its mutual defense pacts with Taiwan were now ended. Japan followed with its own tepid recognition, as it was not eager to anger the already seething Manchurian government that was practically next door to it. Guangzhou was admitted to the United Nations in the same year. Although Manchuria claimed the PRC's seat and veto on the permanent security council, they were threatened with explusion by the U.S., Great Britain, and Russia if they attempted to veto the admission. Guangzhou grew and prospered as Manchuria seethed and sulked on the world stage. Taking a deliberate non-confrontational tack in international relations has set it apart from its hostile cousin, and most nations are on good terms with Guangzhou. Guangzhou's space presence is mostly in cis-lunar space, with a handful of Solar System colonies and settlements on interstellar planets. It was plagued to a small extent by the Commerce War between Manchuria and Russia. Its space force is purely defense in nature and until Manchuria was compelled to end the Commerce War and recognize their southern cousin in 2359, Guangzhou lived perpetually in the shadow of attack, a circumstance which has had a long lasting effect on the public psyche. Though the popular joke about a Guangzhou Chinese is that they care only about money, the truth is that the Guangzhou people understand full well that their prosperity is what makes their independence possible. |
