System Summary:  The SAG+55 2007 System is a binary star system composed of one red giant primary of spectral type M8III orbited by a hot yellow-white dwarf companion of spectral type F3V with a semi-major axis of 28044 AU (0.44 light-years).  The primary star of the system is among the brightest stars in the local volume of space, and can be clearly seen in the northern skies of Fury.  The 'A' star has already begun puffing off its outer layers, making the space around it filled with hot gas and dust, and creating an aerodynamic 'drag' for spacecraft transiting the system space.  This drag is mitigated by the magnetic shields of starships that protect them from solar wind and cosmic rays, but exacts an additional propellant cost for transit burns.  The 'B' star has a lone planet, Scherzo, which is the most populous in the binary system.  The yellow-white dwarf 'B' star is expected to start leaving the main sequence within the next 300 million years.

Planet
Scherzo (SAG+55 2007 B I)

World Overview

Scherzo is a remarkable world orbiting its star at an average distance of 4 AU.  The biosphere is nearly incompatible with Earth-based life and most agriculture is supplied by the moons of Beta and Gamma, which orbit a gas giant that is bound by the system's red giant primary.  Scherzo's atmosphere is breathable, with a rich oxygen content that helps offset the relatively high levels of carbon-dioxide.  Scherzo is an exotically beautiful world, with a panoply of alien flora and fauna that have received little formal study aside from their natural protection from ultraviolet radiation from the 'B' star.  The planet's chief purpose seems to be that of a private retreat for the wealthy and the powerful.  There is no government on Scherzo, only a widely varying series of rules and regulations for the various compounds which have settled the world.  Outside the compounds there is no law, and there are many wags on Fury who feel that the occupants of Scherzo prefer it that way.  The only nod to authority at all are the offices of the SDC and the Bank of Sol, which are found in the largest colony town of Forte (population 9400, est.)

Scherzo Above

The Waystation Class space station
Scherzo Above is located in geosynchronous orbit above the town of Forte, and runs regular shuttle service to and from the planet to the towns of Forte, Belle Epoch, and Lento, which each possess a spaceport with a runway long enough to support large spaceplane landings and takeoffs.  Scherzo Above is run by the SDC, and predates colonization of the planet.

Koda
Koda (SAG+55 2007 B I.2)

World Overview

The Royal Dutch Shell corporation maintains a research outpost on Koda.  It is believed to be involved with mining surveys for a source of raw materials for developing industry on Scherzo.  Of scientific interest is why Koda is so much denser than its parent world, with the most accepted theory being planetary capture.  It is otherwise a small, hot, airless rock.

Primus
Primus (SAG+55 2007 A I)

World Overview

Primus is the first planet in the 'A' star planetary system, a small dense core gas giant with a the typical panoply of moons.  Primus' proximity to the red giant primary enables the presence of liquid water on several of its moons.  The giant's magnetic field helps to shield its moons from the frequent eruptions of gas and charged particles from the primary, and has allowed life to flourish.

Alpha
Alpha (SAG+55 2007 A I.3)

World Overview

Alpha is a hellish world trapped deep in the radiation belts and crushing magnetic fields of its parent gas giant.  It is home to a cadre of radiation-adapted tweaks working for Ceres Metals Corporation to exploit exotic mineral and crystal formations that occur only in such harsh conditions.  Even tweaks hardened to radiation must live deep within the silicate crust of Alpha in order to survive, and landers must make a harrowing approach through the magnetosphere to avoid getting fried.  Needless to say, life on Alpha is no picnic, and trips to Beta and Gamma to escape for awhile are the best rewards one can hope for.

Beta
Beta (SAG+55 2007 A I.6)

World Overview

Beta is a hothouse garden planet with a young biosphere.  The planet sized moon of Primus is known for its extreme heat and humidity, its forests of ferns and other plant forms create extensive, almost impassable jungles and swamps.  The world is wracked by constant rainstorms and the occasional hurricane.  Most people live in the northern and southern lattitudes above 40º where the temperatures are more bearable.  Equatorial dayside temperatures can reach as high 75ºC with nearly 100% humidity.

Beta is home to several competing independent colonies of farmers from mixed backgrounds who make a living supplying the Alpha colony as well as providing luxury produce to Scherzo in exchange for hard currency to buy badly needed technological and infrastructure improvements.  Beta's Near-Compatible biosphere has proven to be more challenging than a simple index number might indicate, however, as the native flora are very aggressive, and the native varmint species are quite prolific.  This has made the competition all the more heated as the farmers fight against a razor thin margin, and sometimes tempers flare into violence.  The SDC has been considering intervention by sending an outpost to Beta to provide an Exchange House and infrastructure improvements to ease the burden.

Gamma
Gamma (SAG+55 2007 A I.8)

World Overview

Gamma was first settled in 2357 and is nominally controlled by Ceres Metals Corporation.  The world was being considered for the headquarters of the corporation prior to the decision to relocate to the cold wastes of Tartarus.  In spite of the great separation between the two star systems, a large population of Ceres Metals employees and their dependents remain on Gamma as farmers.  Gamma is in competition with Beta to supply produce for Alpha, and also provides a rare delicacy fruit called Tranya to Scherzo.  Tranya is a bright orange fruit named after a beverage with a similar orange hue from an obscure Space Age fantasy entertainment program.  The fruit is eaten raw, or can be pressed to release a sweet milky orange juice that has become a common breakfast staple.  The Tranya vines have resisted efforts to cultivate them in an organized fashion, and as a result they must be procured from the steamy jungles that make up Gamma's equatorial zone.  Other settlers have come to Gamma because the climate was more hospitable than Beta's and the biosphere more compatible than Scherzo's.
