Sakura was settled in 2357 by the Sakura Consortium, a group of Japanese corporations including several state-owned companies working together to make Japan a major military, industrial, and economic power in the offworld colonies.  The people of Sakura are almost entirely of Japanese descent, with a small enclave of ethnic Japanese Valar.
Under the dictates of Sakura CEO Masamichi Sakamoto, the nature of life on Sakura is a snapshot of late 19th century Japan with 24th century technology quietly working in the background to support it.  The architecture of the primary colony of New Edo is a reflection of this wedding of the ancient and the modern, and is a source of great pride to the colonists.

Sakura is primarily an agricultural world, where traditional Japanese farming has melded seamlessly with 24th century automation and innovation to produce a bounty of crops, livestock, and aquaculture to support a traditional diet as well as exports to nearby systems.  Sakura has a strong and growing industry that exists primarily in orbit at the Sakura Zaibatsu ONE facility: a cluster of orbital automated factories and mineral refineries that provides the bulk of Sakura's industrial output.  Raw materials are provided from the asteroid belt and from the nearby moons.  An orbital shipyard has been completed and has begun the construction and repair of starships, though at the moment the Consortium is dependent on purchasing stardrives and fusion reactors from Mercer Heavy Industries until such time as they can bring their own production facilities on line.
