Pu'uhonua translates roughly as "refuge" in the Hawaiian language, and it is native Hawaiians who make up the bulk of this world's population. The colony was set up under a personal development grant from Gavin Aurimas, who paid for passage to the world for over 500 native Hawaiians who wanted to start a new home far from Earth, that they might preserve what was left of their culture. Because of this cultural imperative, Pu'uhonua is decidedly primitive by most standards, and the Pu'uhonuans have no spacecraft of their own to look after their interests. The SDC, under orders from Gavin Aurimas, will periodically send a Bonaventure class starship through the HM+35 2017 system to check up on the colonists, who always offer a warm Kamaaina welcome to the landing party. A small spaceport and colony town is in development with a mind towards catering to tourists and starship crews on liberty. The slow growth of the tourism industry has lead to the export of the venom of a dangerous sea creature known as the Sea Dragon. The Sea Dragon's venom, when heavily diluted and mixed with an unknown blend of locally available herbs and seaweed, has a powerful psychoactive effect on humans, generally accentuating sensory experience and amplifying mood states.
