HM+36 2309 III A, or Paydirt, as it is now known, is the inhabited world in a double planet binary pair in the 3rd orbit.  It is the source for a large iridium strike vital to the production of stardrives as well as other ultratech machinery.  Paydirt is being mined by small wildcat prospecting groups as much it is by corporate production, and the law is a very tenuous thing on the planet.  Efforts to force the wildcats out has resulted in minor but expensive and worrisome sabotage to corporate habitats and the rise of militant left-wing anarchists inciting riots among the miners.  The SDC is getting ready to step in and arbitrate before a massacre on either side happens.  The Ceres Metals Corporation has a small compound here, as does the Royal Dutch Shell Corporation and Weyland-Yutani.

Paydirt has shallow seas warmed by geothermal vents from the active geology of the crust and mantle, allowing the water to remain a liquid even near the poles in spite of the frigid temperatures.  These seas are constantly shrouded in mist due to the very low boiling point caused by the thin carbon dioxide atmosphere.  This mist is driven from the poles towards the equator by coriolis forces, where the highlands chill creates constant drizzling rain and snowfall.  The native life consists of various plankton and microbes sustained by the geothermally heated sea vents and a hardy grey-green lichen on land.  Settlements consist of the three big corporate compounds, which are pressurized habitat domes, a scattering of come-and-go tumbletowns consisting of wrecked landers, old drop capsules, and inflatable hostile environment tents, and Copper Canyon, a three hundred meter long and half kilometer deep rent in the surface that has been roofed over and pressurized.  Copper Canyon is the stronghold of the wildcatters, who continue to work veins of copper, gold, and (they hope) an iridium strike to equal the ones the corporations possess.  The wildcats are stuck negotiating small lot deals with free traders for the sale of their refined metals unless they choose to sell to one of the three corporations on Paydirt.  The corps pay rock bottom prices, but they will also accept ore instead of refined metal, and will buy all of the product the miners can offer.  The corps are also one of the only reliable sources for finished goods, spare parts, and supplies, though the miners often pay a dear price for them in the Company Stores.
