Neu Bavaria was founded in 2359 by a colony of European Union expatriates, Germans from the Munich region chief among them. The colony is on a main trade route, but is isolated by its great distance. The world is blessed with a very compatible biosphere, and is self-sufficient in food production. It is at the terminus of a long trade arm that extends from Gateway and Fury to Waystation Alfa, Paydirt, Pu'uhonua, Avignon, Tartarus, and then finally to Neu Bavaria. Major exports are processed foodstuffs, and the colony seeks to import heavy machinery, additional autofab machine tools, and design templates. The Bank of Sol has a branch office in the space station Neu Bavaria Above. Neu Bavaria is also gaining a reputation as an artist's colony, particularly in the performing arts.
The colony is an independent world with a representative democratic local government. In reality, most political and economic power is concentrated in the hands of a conglomeration of several wealthy families who were able to ship autofab plants to the world and possessed sufficient design templates to make them useful. They were then able to trade vital industrial capacity for the raw materials and food provided for by the remaining colonists, which has increased their wealth and standing in the colony. The colony's nine person Executive Committee is dominated by a six person majority from this conglomerate.
