An SDC space station, Waypoint Charlie, also serves the system. It has a permanent population of about 25. The HD+54 1018 system primary has been noted as a variable flare star, and caution is warranted when transiting the system to be on the look-out for solar flare activity. A colony of Giants has nonetheless settled Muspellheim to mine the vast amounts of easily accessible uranium ore that have been discovered, and the SDC has been buying up all of the yellowcake they can deliver from their refineries. The planet has an insidious bacteriological ecosystem that consumes the rubber and synthetic rubber seals on pressure suits, doors and hatches, and other vital sealing components, which makes maintenance a constant battle against nature. ![]() Midgard ![]() Midgard (HD+54 1018 IV) Orbital Number: 4 Orbital Semi-Major Axis: 39,516,215 km (0.263 AU) Orbital Eccentricity: 0.007 Orbital Inclination: 1.6º Orbital Period: 66.22 Terran Days, 24.3 Local Days Orbital Velocity: 0.88 km/sec Orbital ΔV: 6.74 km/sec Axial Tilt: 13.9º Rotation: 65.4 hours Satellites: 1; 1 asteroidal body World Type: Metallic Core Rocky Planet Climate Type: Cold Garden Planet Biosphere: Adolescent, 0.72 Compatibility Index (1.00 = Earth) Diameter: 6,440 km Density: 6.07 g/cm3 (1.1 Earth) Surface Gravity: 0.56 G (5.44 m/sec2) Atmospheric Pressure (Sea Level): 0.64 Bar (9.26 PSIA) Atmospheric Contents (Partial Pressures): Oxygen 0.314 Bar, Nitrogen 0.314 Bar, Krypton 0.013 Bar, Trace Water Vapor, Carbon-Dioxide Hydrography: 38% Mean Surface Temperature: 262ºK (-11ºC) Population: 16,190 (est.) The planet is in the middle of an ice age at the moment, but the equatorial bands are quite comfortable to live in. The oxygen rich atmosphere is a boon to the settlers, who must content themselves with a biosphere that is only Near Compatible due to a multitude of amino groups that are not expressed in Earth Based life making up the bulk of the developing animal and plant life. Midgard's economy is stagnant, and the colony is having a hard time producing things for export in order to purchase the things it needs for development. At the moment the colony's biggest trading partner is the nearby planet of Muspellheim, which purchases food and liquor from Midgard farming cooperatives with the Solarian Dollars it receives from the SDC for the sale of yellowcake uranium. This arrangement is thus totally dependent upon the demand for yellowcake in order to support both worlds, and is understandably uncertain. The Colonial Administration, comprised of the shareholders and led by a board of directors representing the eight largest voting blocks of shares, is lobbying heavily for development grants from the SDC, and to this end is a signatory to and an enthusiastic supporter of the Mercer Compact. Midgard has a growing problem with a ferocious local predator known as the Land Vaeter, a canine sized furry bipedal reptile that hunts in packs. Land Vaeters were unknown until 2361, but have since been encountered ranging closer to human settlements, where they attack livestock and in some cases, even humans. Notable flora on Midgard include vast forests of fungi-coral, towering constructs of greenish fungal colonies whose inner layers ossify into a hollow organic ceramic structure that outer layers build and thrive upon. These towers can grow to heights of 30 meters and more in Midgard's low gravity. ![]() |
