Avignon was settled by a joint Fabrique-Quebecois/ETE consortium of Canadian, French, Senegalese, and Portuguese colonists as a colony with a primary interest in supporting the mining operations on Motherlode, and was immediately successful in this endeavor.  Most of the miners' families enjoy a relatively easy life on Avignon thanks to the balmy climate and one of the most compatible biospheres outside of Fury in the Sagittarius spiral arm.  The availability of nearby abundant foodstuffs and volatiles also helps keep overhead at the Motherlode low and profits high, even for the smallest wildcat operation.  Life on Avignon is pleasant, with a very compatible Biosphere and enough axial tilt to create mild seasonal variations.  The minimal ecological footprint development standards of the founding Fabrique-Quebecois/Exo-Total-Elf corporation have created a fairly high-tech colony that exists in harmony with the native life forms.  The price for living in such lush environs is steep, and those colonists who could not front the $500,000 Solarian dollars for their share of the venture (plus interstellar traveling expenses) paid their way by signing iron-clad long term employment contracts with FQ/ETE that many have criticized as nothing short of indentured servitude.  Most of the miners working the Motherlode and their families are living in the system under such an arrangement, though the SDC at Gavin Aurimas' insistence has persuaded the corporation to extend Land Grants and accompanying shares in the colony to its citizens in exchange for an SDC charter.

The Motherlode planetoid consists of nearly pure metal - mostly iron and nickel - but also significant veins of chromium, titanium, and rare earth metals embedded in a silicate crust.  The planetoid is being carved up as fast as the metals can be separated and shipped out of system.  Even though Motherlode has only about 0.1% of Earth's mass, there will still be plenty of the world for prospectors to exploit a century from now.  Avignon receives very little of the produced metals, as it lacks the industrial base to utilize these resources.  Ceres Metals Corporation purchases the bulk of the metals produced on the Motherlode for resale on Fury, Aquilla, and elsewhere, though it does so through FQ/ETE intermediaries in orbit around Avignon in order to accrue trade credit for Avignon's vital agricultural products needed to feed its population in the nearby Tartarus system.
