Planet
Aquilla (SAG+56 0107 II)

World Overview

Aquilla was settled early in 2357 at the beginning of the colony rush.  The planet is warmer than Earth, and its fast rotation and the tidal pull of its large moon Falcone can whip up brutal storms and fierce winds in the lower lattitudes.  A colony of Spanish and Argentinian expatriates represents the largest settlement on the world, though there are other smaller settlements of varying nationalities and creeds.  All are governed through the Aquilla Development Cooperative, which raised money for colonization in Sagittarius through several private foundations, including the Aurimas Foundation, and through private contributions by settlers.  Settlers to Aquilla and their descendents are given a Land Grant upon reaching age 21 of approximately 100 hectares, as well as one share in the Aquilla Development Cooperative.  Dividends on the stock are not expected to be issued for some time, as all profits derived from taxation and trade are being reinvested in the infrastructure of the colony.  Like most Colonial Development Corporations, stock ownership grants the bearer one vote per share of stock during annual referendums on colonial development, and only stock holders may be officers of the corporation, hold public office, or serve as planetary law enforcement.  There are several colony towns on Aquilla, each of them run by a locally elected mayor and council, and numerous ranches and farmsteads scattered around the major settlements.  Law enforcement is limited to an elected Sheriff and whatever deputies and staff he can afford on the budget granted to him by the town council for each "county."  At this point a county is a vague term that roughly defines the area up to the radius of a full tank of fuel for an offroad vehicle or several days ride on Horseclaw - about 300 to 500 kilometers from the colony town.

Aquilla is rich in resources and is relatively close to the core of the arm. which has allowed it to grow rapidly since the colonies were founded.  Due to the nature of the jump point locations and Aquilla's very distant orbit around its primary, it is less fuel expensive and time consuming to come to the SAG+56 0107 system than it is to leave it, which while putting a premium on exports, has created a situation where economic ventures are focused inward even more so than with most new colonies.  This has had the effect of creating an enormously independent spirit among the Aquillans.

One of the chief drawbacks to life on Aquilla (aside from a year that’s over 13,000 Aquillan days long) is that the biosphere has a compatibility index of only 0.75 which has made certain crops and livestock difficult to raise.  The genetically engineered Horseclaw appears to flourish on Aquilla, and ranches that breed, raise, and train them for export are growing in economic value for the colony.  Natives of Aquilla may also run afoul of the dreaded Hoop Snake.  A local cactus resembling the Terran blue agave has been put to a similar use as its Earth-bound cousin to produce a distilled sweet liquor of strong proof known as Agua de Aquilla (Water of Aquilla), which is consumed religiously.  It is believed that any unconsumed Agua de Aquilla will only improve as it gets a chance to age in wooden casks, but as to how long this will take to reach its peak is unknown as the product has only been available since 2358.

falcone
Falcone (SAG+56 0107 II.1)

World Overview

Falcone supports a mining camp working a lode of titanium with some other heavy metals on the side.  Most of the mine utilizes automated robots for its function, with the miners being responsible for giving direction and providing maintenance.  Refined metal is collected via shuttle craft and transfered to Aquilla geostationary orbit.  The moon's atmosphere prevents the preferred method of electromagnetic catapult shot into orbit, as cargoes would burn up due to friction, so a laser lift catapult is utilized instead.  Only the comparatively easy access to useful metals keeps the operation profitable.  The biosphere is very primitive, and confined to algaes, slimes, and various plankton in the seas.  What little free oxygen is produced by photosynthetic organisms is soaked up into the rocks, which have not yet become saturated.
